US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that imposing additional sanctions on Russia and countries buying its oil including India could trigger a total economic collapse, forcing President Vladimir Putin back to the negotiating table for peace talks with Ukraine.
&ldquo;We are in a race now between how long the Ukrainian military can hold up versus how long the Russian economy can hold up,&rdquo; Bessent commented. &ldquo;If the US and EU come in with more sanctions, more secondary tariffs on the countries that buy Russian oil, the Russian economy will be in full collapse, and that will bring President Putin to the table.&rdquo;
He did not explicitly name countries but India has been a prominent target of US tariffs over Russian oil imports, despite a recent thaw in relations where President Donald Trump and PM Narendra Modi publicly highlighted mutual respect and friendship.
&ldquo;We (the US) are prepared to increase pressure on Russia, but we need our partners in Europe to follow,&rdquo; Bessent added.
Russia has faced severe sanctions from the US and Europe since the war in Ukraine began, but has maintained buyers for its oil and gas in India, China, and elsewhere. US officials, including Vice President JD Vance, have described these tariffs as leverage to counter Russian aggression.
India has defended its Russian oil deals, arguing that the 25% US tariff bringing total import duties on many Indian products to 50% is unjustified and that its actions reflect sovereign national interest.
Bessent also expressed confidence that legal challenges to the sanctions will ultimately be upheld. &ldquo;I am confident that we will win at the Supreme Court,&rdquo; he said.
The warning comes as Russia escalated the war by bombing Kyiv&rsquo;s main government complex, an attack described by Ukraine and its European allies as a serious intensification of hostilities.

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has firmly denied a viral social media message suggesting that new GST transition benefits will take effect from September 22. The widely circulated post claimed that unused cess credit, input tax credit (ITC) on exempted supplies, and fresh price adjustment provisions would soon be allowed.
CBIC clarified on Sunday that the message is &ldquo;false and misleading,&rdquo; stressing that no such reforms are planned.
&ldquo;It has come to notice that an informal message claiming to be from Chairman CBIC is being widely circulated on social media, claiming that certain transition benefits under GST will be applicable from September 22&hellip; It is hereby informed that such claims are factually incorrect and misleading,&rdquo; the board said in a statement.
The tax authority urged traders, industry stakeholders, and the public to depend solely on official government notifications, circulars, and FAQs for reliable updates on GST.
The viral message had incorrectly suggested sweeping changes to GST rules. CBIC reminded that actual reforms, including a major rate restructuring, have already been implemented. The GST now functions under a simplified two-slab system of 5% and 18%, with a special 40% rate reserved for luxury and sin goods such as tobacco and cigarettes.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the strike as a decisive blow against organized crime.
But the attack has sharply escalated tensions with Caracas. Venezuelan President Nicol&aacute;s Maduro accused Washington of attempting &ldquo;regime change&rdquo; and warned he was ready to &ldquo;declare a republic in arms&rdquo; if threatened.
Critics say the killings raise profound questions under international law, with some linking it to an extrajudicial execution. Krassenstein pressed the point with a stark analogy: &ldquo;Imagine if Venezuela decided to bomb a boat driving from Maryland to New York City, which had 11 Americans and a bunch of drugs in it. What would be your response?&rdquo;
Vance&rsquo;s remarks have drawn fierce backlash online. Religious opponents reminded the Catholic vice president of biblical teachings, with one user quoting scripture: &ldquo;Murder is wrong.&rdquo; Others accused him of committing &ldquo;sins that cry out to heaven for vengeance.&rdquo;
The controversy underscores the widening gulf between Washington&rsquo;s hardline anti-narcotics strategy and international calls for restraint, even as Venezuela warns of retaliation.

London witnessed one of its largest waves of mass arrests in recent years after police detained nearly 900 demonstrators protesting against the ban on Palestine Action, a direct-action group recently proscribed as a terrorist organization.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that 857 people were arrested under the Terrorism Act for publicly supporting a proscribed group, while 33 others were held on charges including assaulting officers.
The protest, organized by campaign group Defend Our Juries, drew around 1,500 people outside Parliament. Many sat silently, holding signs reading: &ldquo;I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action.&rdquo; Within minutes, officers began making arrests, sparking chants of &ldquo;Shame on you&rdquo; and &ldquo;Justice or genocide.&rdquo;
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Claire Smart said officers had been &ldquo;punched, kicked, spat on and had objects thrown at them,&rdquo; describing the abuse as &ldquo;intolerable.&rdquo; Protest organizers rejected those claims, accusing police of heavy-handedness.
This latest action brings the total number of arrests since the group was outlawed two months ago to almost 1,600, with more than 700 detained earlier and 138 charged under terrorism laws. Among those repeatedly arrested is Mike Higgins, a blind 62-year-old wheelchair user, who said: &ldquo;And I&rsquo;m a terrorist? That&rsquo;s the joke of it. Of course I&rsquo;ll keep coming back. What choice do I have?&rdquo;
The British government proscribed Palestine Action in July after activists stormed a Royal Air Force base and vandalized aircraft with crowbars and red paint to protest alleged UK support for Israel&rsquo;s military campaign in Gaza. Membership or public support for the group now carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison.
Founded in 2020, Palestine Action has carried out high-profile raids on facilities linked to Israeli weapons maker Elbit Systems UK, claiming responsibility for millions of pounds in damages. Former Home Secretary Yvette Cooper defended the ban, insisting: &ldquo;The assessments are very clear, this is not a nonviolent organization.&rdquo;
The ban is currently being challenged in court, with a hearing set for September 25.
International criticism has followed. UN human rights chief Volker T&uuml;rk warned that Britain&rsquo;s approach &ldquo;misuses the gravity and impact of terrorism&rdquo; and risks suppressing fundamental freedoms. Co-founder Huda Ammori called the move &ldquo;catastrophic for civil liberties,&rdquo; warning of a &ldquo;chilling effect&rdquo; on free speech.
The group continues to receive backing from high-profile cultural figures, including novelist Sally Rooney, who pledged to keep supporting direct action against what she called genocide.
Meanwhile, a separate pro-Palestinian march drew an estimated 20,000 participants in London the same day, underscoring the depth of public anger over the Gaza conflict and Britain&rsquo;s response.

Playback singer Aditya Gadhvi, who is known for his viral hit &lsquo;Khalasi&rsquo;, has shared that folk instruments are not means of producing a particular sound texture, they are tools of storytelling used to propagate traditions from across centuries.
Aditya, who hails from Gujarat, spoke up on the importance of the festival of Navratri in Gujarati culture.
The singer told IANS, &ldquo;Navratri is a deeply spiritual time, and music plays a significant role in connecting us with our roots. For me, folk instruments are not just tools for creating sound, they are storytellers that carry centuries of tradition. Instruments like the khanjira and dholak bring out the raw emotion of our folk music&rdquo;.
He further mentioned, &ldquo;I feel fortunate to be a part of projects like Coke Studio Bharat&rsquo;s 'Khalasi,' which gave me the opportunity to showcase these timeless sounds to a wider audience. It's not just about keeping the tradition alive, but also about giving it new life in the modern music landscape&rdquo;.
Upon its release, &lsquo;Khalasi&rsquo; emerged as a rage as it led to countless Reels on Instagram, and also topped the charts owing to its rooted essence and poetry.
