A shocking case has surfaced from the Naujheel area of Mathura where a self-proclaimed tantrik allegedly raped a 35-year-old married woman under the guise of helping her conceive.
Police officials said the woman, who had been childless despite eight years of marriage, approached the man for a solution. The tantrik, identified as 45-year-old Mushtaq Ali, assured her that a special ritual would help her bear a child. Instead, he sexually assaulted her on Saturday.
Superintendent of Police (Rural) Suresh Chandra Rawat confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused is on the run, and police teams are conducting raids to trace him.
The incident once again highlights the dangers of blind faith and the exploitation of vulnerable women by fraudulent healers. Authorities have urged people to remain cautious and report such exploitative practices

In a surprising discovery during Bihar&rsquo;s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, a woman of Pakistani origin, who allegedly entered India nearly seven decades ago, was found on the draft electoral roll in Bhagalpur. Officials have initiated a formal process to remove her name and verify the circumstances of her long-term stay in India.
The development came as part of a Home Ministry verification drive aimed at identifying foreign nationals residing in India beyond their visa validity. The woman&rsquo;s name appeared on the state&rsquo;s voter list and was verified during the SIR process by the concerned Booth Level Officer (BLO).
&ldquo;I received a formal communication from the department on August 11, along with her passport and visa details confirming her Pakistani nationality. Her passport was issued in Rangpur in 1956, and the visa in 1958,&rdquo; the BLO said. She added that the woman, in poor health, was unable to respond during verification, and the formalities were completed as per procedure. Form 7 was submitted to initiate her deletion from the voter roll.
Bhagalpur District Magistrate Dr Naval Kishor Chaudhary confirmed the action, stating, &ldquo;Her name was found on the electoral roll. The deletion process has begun, and a formal investigation into her continued residence and inclusion will follow due procedure.&rdquo;
The SIR in Bihar, launched in July ahead of assembly elections, distributed and collected forms from June 25 to July 25. Out of 7.89 crore registered electors, 7.24 crore forms were received. The draft roll, published on August 1, excluded roughly 65 lakh names due to death, relocation, or duplicate enrollment. Eligible voters were given a month to submit supporting documents or raise objections.
As of Sunday, the Election Commission confirmed receipt of documents from 98.2% of listed electors in Bihar&rsquo;s draft rolls, highlighting the extensive verification process in the state.

In a major anti-Maoist operation, security forces in Chhattisgarh&rsquo;s Sukma district recovered an extensive cache of weapons, explosives, and iron materials meant to target personnel, officials said.
Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint team of 203 CoBRA Battalion, CRPF&rsquo;s 241 Bastar Battalion, and Sukma district forces from the Mettaguda camp launched a search on Saturday in the forested hill areas of Koimeta, Eerapalli, Botelanka, and Dareli. Around 11 a.m., teams discovered the hidden Maoist stockpile near Koimeta hills.
The recovered items included country-made rifles, a BGL launcher with barrel, explosives, electrical wiring, 480 iron clamps, steel pipes, rods, welding holders, ground supporters, a broken UAV Netra propeller, a black uniform, and ammunition pouches. Officials said these materials were stockpiled to make and plant IEDs to target security personnel.
&ldquo;The recovery has once again foiled Maoist plans to inflict damage on our forces. Anti-Maoist operations will continue across Sukma under the ongoing elimination drive,&rdquo; a senior official said.
The operation was led by 203 CoBRA Commandant Pawan Kumar Singh and Deputy Commandant Praveen Kumar. Teams returned safely without casualties.

Investments under India&rsquo;s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes have surpassed Rs 1.76 lakh crore, marking a significant step in the country&rsquo;s transformation into a global manufacturing powerhouse. The schemes have boosted output, exports, and employment, reducing India&rsquo;s dependence on imports and strengthening domestic manufacturing.
By supporting sunrise sectors, promoting innovation, and anchoring global supply chains locally, PLI initiatives are strategically enhancing India&rsquo;s manufacturing base. Total sales by PLI participants have exceeded Rs 16.5 lakh crore, with key gains in electronics, pharmaceuticals, automotive, and textiles. The schemes have also generated over 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs, while spurring development in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
With an incentive outlay of Rs 1.97 lakh crore, 806 applications have been approved across 14 sectors, reflecting strong industry confidence. The initiatives aim to raise manufacturing&rsquo;s contribution to 25% of GDP and establish India as a leading industrial economy.
Electronics has emerged as a flagship sector, with production surging 146% from Rs 2.13 lakh crore in FY 2020-21 to Rs 5.25 lakh crore in FY 2024-25. Major smartphone manufacturers have shifted production to India, making the country a key mobile phone manufacturing hub.
The automobile and auto components sector has attracted Rs 67,690 crore in committed investments, generating over 28,884 jobs. The PLI schemes are also supporting India&rsquo;s transition to a global EV and clean-tech hub under the FAME initiative.
In food processing, 171 PLI applications have been approved with investments exceeding Rs 8,910 crore, complementing initiatives like PM-FME and PMKSY to modernize units, enhance branding, and boost value-added exports.
The pharmaceutical sector has shifted from import dependence to net exports of bulk drugs worth Rs 2,280 crore in FY 2024-25. Sales under the PLI scheme crossed Rs 2.66 lakh crore in three years, including exports of Rs 1.70 lakh crore, with domestic value addition at 83.7%.
High-efficiency solar PV module production has attracted Rs 48,120 crore in investments, generating nearly 38,500 direct jobs. The semiconductor sector is also growing, with six projects in progress and four additional units approved under the India Semiconductor Mission, creating thousands of skilled jobs and strengthening the electronics ecosystem.
Textile PLI schemes, approved with Rs 10,683 crore, have boosted man-made fibre and technical textile production and exports, while white goods initiatives aim to increase domestic value addition from 20&ndash;25% to 75&ndash;80% by 2028&ndash;29.
The PLI schemes are thus positioning India as a global manufacturing hub, driving investment, job creation, and technological advancement across strategic sectors. In a major border security operation, the Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended former Bangladeshi police officer Md Arifuzzaman, who attempted to enter India illegally, and he has now been remanded to 14-day jail custody.
The incident occurred on Saturday night at the Hakimpur check post on the India-Bangladesh border in Swarupnagar, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Taking advantage of heavy monsoon rains, Arifuzzaman, a former Assistant Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, tried to slip into India undetected.
&ldquo;As soon as he crossed the border, he was immediately detained by the 143rd Battalion of BSF and handed over to Swarupnagar police,&rdquo; sources said. Several official documents were recovered from him and have been submitted to senior Indian government authorities.
Arifuzzaman had been in hiding in Satkhira district, Bangladesh, following the change in government, fearing prosecution under the current administration led by Sheikh Hasina. He was recently suspended from his post in the Armed Police Battalion-2, Muktagacha, Mymensingh, for being absent from duty since October 14, 2024, without official approval.
Officials said that diplomatic communication has already taken place between the High Commissioners of India and Bangladesh regarding the case.

Mumbai: A new genus and snake species discovered in the Himalayas has been named after the Academy Award-winning Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio &mdash; the &lsquo;Titanic&rsquo; star who is also a passionate environmentalist, officials said here on Tuesday. 
The newly described snake species, &lsquo;Anguiculus dicaprioi&rsquo; is distributed from central Nepal to Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh, whereas &lsquo;Anguiculus rappii&rsquo; is found in Sikkim, Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh.
These snakes are mostly active from late May to August and are not found at other times of the year, nothing is known about the biology of the two species, and &lsquo;Anguiculus rappii&rsquo; is rare and has not been recorded in the last couple of decades.
The snake was first found by Virender Bhardwaj in the backyard of his home in the western Himalayas during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
He posted its pictures on social media, leading to a sensation &mdash; and a three-year-long investigation coupled with laborious research &mdash; to identify the snake which resembled &lsquo;Liopeltis rappi&rsquo;, a species known to be distributed in the eastern Himalayas.
However, the population from Himachal Pradesh differed from the true &lsquo;Liopeltis rappi&rsquo; found in Sikkim in many aspects like the scales on the head and general colour patterns &mdash; which was confirmed by examining specimens from natural history museums across Europe, the US and even India.
Besides, the DNA sequences generated for this snake did not match any genus and the team included DNA and morphological data for other related species from all over Asia.
The complication of the molecular and morphological data suggested that the snake from HP is related to &lsquo;Liopeltis rappi&rsquo; but differed in many aspects, to be called a new species, and both these belong to a new genus that is endemic to the Himalayas region.
A research paper was authored by Zeeshan A Mirza of Max Planck Institute for Biology at Tubingen (Germany); Virender K Bhardwaj and HT Lalremsanga of Mizoram University (India); Saunak Pal of the Newcastle University (UK); Gernot Vogel of the Society for Southeast Asian Herpetology (Germany); Patrick D Cambell of the Natural History Museum (UK) and Harshil Patel of the Thackeray Wildlife Foundation (Mumbai, India).
The research paper was submitted early this year and published recently by Scientific Reports, an international peer-reviewed journal.
DiCaprio has been actively involved in creating awareness about global climate change, increased biodiversity losses and the impact of pollution on human health plus related issues.
&ldquo;The specific epithet &lsquo;dicaprioi&rsquo; is a patronym honouring Leonardo DiCaprio, an American actor, film producer, and environmentalist who has been actively involved in creating awareness about global climate change, increased biodiversity loss, and human health issues through pollution,&rdquo; the report explained.
&ldquo;The work not only resolved the status of the Himalayan species but also resolved a taxonomic confusion regarding the genera Liopeltis and Gongylosoma that lasted 180 years. The work provides a newly revised classification of these two genera that are distributed across Asia,&rdquo; said a statement here.
The members of the genus Anguiculus are small and are currently known by two species and these snakes are found at elevations above 1,500 metres across the Himalayas.
The authors said that the description of a new snake genus and species from Himachal Pradesh highlights the poor herpetofauna documentation of the western Himalayas.
Preliminary field surveys across Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand suggest that the region&rsquo;s biodiversity has been grossly underestimated, and along with Jammu &amp; Kashmir, remain the least explored for the herpetofauna biota they host.
