What began with a protest by Chinese nationals blocking a road in Sost has spiraled into a larger movement by local traders, who accuse both Beijing and Islamabad of sidelining their livelihoods.
Traders argue that the much-celebrated China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has delivered little benefit to them. Instead, they face heavy customs scrutiny, new federal taxes, and bureaucratic hurdles, while Chinese goods often pass unchecked. Many also resent that infrastructure jobs promised under CPEC have gone to Chinese workers flown in, leaving locals unemployed.
The Pak-China Traders Action Committee (PCTAC) has been leading demonstrations since late July, blocking key routes like the Karakoram Highway and disrupting cross-border trade. Their anger intensified after federal authorities arrested local leaders, though they were later released under pressure.
Residents say Gilgit-Baltistan is being reduced to a mere transit zone for Chinese commerce while its people remain politically marginalized. Without full provincial rights, the region lacks a strong voice to challenge policies that favor foreign interests.
While some welcome new roads and tunnels built under CPEC, many see China&rsquo;s presence as an economic occupation. The rising protests highlight not only growing anti-China sentiment but also simmering anger at Islamabad for ignoring local voices in decisions that shape GB&rsquo;s future.
