Europe is facing an alarming surge in mosquito-borne illnesses, with both West Nile virus (WNV) and chikungunya setting unprecedented records this year. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has warned that rising temperatures, shifting rainfall, longer summers, and milder winters have created ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, intensifying the risk of transmission.
&ldquo;Europe is entering a new phase where longer, more widespread and more intense transmission of mosquito-borne diseases is becoming the new normal,&rdquo; said&nbsp;ECDC Director Pamela Rendi-Wagner, stressing the urgent need for continent-wide preparedness.
The report highlighted that Aedes albopictus, the mosquito capable of spreading chikungunya, is now firmly established in 16 European nations and 369 regions, a massive jump from just 114 regions a decade earlier. This rapid expansion, combined with international travel, makes local outbreaks increasingly likely.
Europe has already witnessed 27 chikungunya outbreaks in 2025, the highest ever recorded. For the first tme, it was France&rsquo;s Alsace region that reported a locally transmitted case of chikungunya, signaling how the risk zone is pushing further north.
West Nile virus, too, is spreading to new territories each year. Infections were recently detected for the first time in Italy&rsquo;s Latina and Frosinone provinces and in Sălaj County, Romania. Europe has also logged its highest West Nile case count in the past three years, with numbers expected to peak in August and September.
&ldquo;As the mosquito-borne disease landscape evolves, more people in Europe will be at risk in the future. This makes prevention more important than ever, both through coordinated public health action and personal protection measures. There is an urgent need to strengthen and scale up efficient, environmentally friendly mosquito control interventions,&rdquo; said Dr C&eacute;line Gossner, Head of Section for Food, Water, Vector-borne and Zoonotic Diseases at ECDC.
Health experts caution that without swift action, mosquito-borne illnesses could become an entrenched reality in Europe, reshaping public health strategies for years to come.

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Wednesday engaged in an interaction with prominent Russian scholars and think tank representatives, discussing bilateral ties between India and Russia, the evolving global geopolitics and India's perspective during his ongoing three-day official visit to Russia.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Pleased to interact with prominent scholars and think tank representatives of Russia. Discussed India-Russia relations, contemporary world geopolitics, and India's viewpoint," the EAM posted on X.
Jaishankar also laid a wreath at the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier" in Moscow&rsquo;s Alexander Garden, a war memorial dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who died during the Second World War.
The EAM is scheduled to co-chair the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) in Moscow aimed at further deepening bilateral relations.
EAM Jaishankar&rsquo;s visit comes at the invitation of Denis Manturov, the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted the strategic significance of the visit.
"The visit aims to further strengthen the longstanding and time-tested India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership," the MEA said in a statement ahead of his visit.
During his stay, Jaishankar will also hold bilateral talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. 
The meeting marks a continuation of frequent high-level exchanges between the two countries.
The two leaders had previously met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers' meeting on July 15, as well as during the recent BRICS Summit.
Earlier this year, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also visited Moscow for Foreign Office Consultations with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, underscoring the consistent diplomatic momentum between New Delhi and Moscow.
The visits precede a potential high-level interaction as Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India later this year following an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Australia will play a three-match ODI series in India immediately before the World Cup happens, and Ashleigh stated Australia will prepare for the "rude shock" of returning to 50-over cricket after playing in The Hundred.
"We're going to be spending double the time on our feet, so I know for us Aussie players, we play a game of cricket, but then the next day or that day we need to then run again, we need to gym."
"It might be mentally taxing at the time, knowing that you have to play a game of cricket, which you're obviously trying to win and be successful in, but also having one eye on the World Cup and making sure that our bodies are getting in the right spot."
"It's making sure that training days are really big and you're getting a lot out of that and then you're doing your cricket skills, of course. Then game days, you're trying to tick those off as well, so they do become quite big days. I love playing franchise cricket, but playing for Australia is always going to be that No. 1 option for me, so making sure that I've got my focus on that as well," she added.

The government on Wednesday introduced the "Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025", aiming to boost e-sports and positive online social games while completely banning harmful online money gaming activities.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The Bill is designed to strike a balance between encouraging innovation in the digital gaming industry and protecting citizens, especially the youth, from financial and social harm.
Officials said the new legislation will give a big push to e-sports, recognising it as a legitimate competitive sport.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will be setting up training academies, research centres and frameworks to support the growth of e-sports in India.
Online social games that promote education, culture and skill development will also receive government support.
At the same time, the Bill has drawn a strict line against online money games such as betting, gambling, poker, rummy and fantasy sports involving real money.
It not only bans such platforms but also prohibits advertisements, promotions and financial transactions related to them.
Banks and payment systems will not be allowed to process payments linked to money gaming apps.
The government has stressed that these measures are necessary to protect young people and families from falling into cycles of debt, addiction and financial distress.
The Bill also addresses national security concerns. 
Authorities noted that online money gaming platforms have been misused in the past for fraud, money laundering and even terror financing.
By outlawing such activities, the law brings the online world in line with restrictions already in place for physical gambling under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and various state laws.
A national-level "Online Gaming Authority" will be set up to regulate the sector. 
This body will categorise and register games, decide which ones qualify as money games, and handle complaints from citizens.
It will also issue guidelines to ensure safe and responsible gaming practices.
The Bill prescribes strong penalties for violations. Offering or promoting online money gaming could lead to imprisonment of up to three years and fines up to ₹1 crore, while repeat offenders may face harsher punishment. Companies involved in such offences will also be held accountable.
Government officials emphasised that this move is not just about regulation but also about creating opportunities.
By promoting e-sports and safe social games, India hopes to become a global hub for creative game development and exports.
At the same time, the law will protect families from the psychological, financial and social harms linked to online betting and gambling.

In a significant breakthrough for Chhattisgarh&rsquo;s anti-Naxal strategy, 21 Maoists, including 13 carrying cash rewards totalling ₹25.5 lakh, surrendered before security forces in Dantewada district on Wednesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The surrender was carried out under the state&rsquo;s flagship campaigns &mdash; &ldquo;Puna Margam (Revival through Rehabilitation)" and &ldquo;Lon Varratu (Come Back Home)" &mdash; which aim to reintegrate misguided youth into mainstream society.
Among the surrendered cadres was Keye alias Kesha Lekam, a company No. one member with an ₹8 lakh bounty, who was involved in a deadly encounter with police in Parasbeda forest earlier this year.
Female Maoists Somey alias Jamli Kuhram and Kumari Hidme alias Vijjo Oyam, each carrying ₹ one lakh rewards, were also among those who laid down arms. 
Both had participated in multiple armed confrontations in Pidia, Todka, and Korcholi forests between 2023 and 2025.
The remaining surrendered Maoists were involved in activities such as road sabotage, tree felling, and propaganda during Naxalite bandh weeks. 
Their decision to surrender was attributed to growing disillusionment with the Maoist ideology, internal factionalism, and the harsh realities of forest life.
Many expressed a desire to live peacefully and contribute to society through lawful means.
They surrendered before the Superintendent of Police Office in Dantewada in the presence of DIG (deputy inspector general) Dantewada Range Kamalochan Kashyap, DIG CRPF Rakesh Chaudhary, SP Dantewada Gaurav Rai, and CRPF Commandants from the 111th, 230th, and 231st Battalions.
The District Reserve Guard (DRG), Bastar Fighters, Special Intelligence Branch, and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) units played a crucial role in facilitating the surrender.
Under the Chhattisgarh government&rsquo;s rehabilitation policy, each surrendered Maoist will receive ₹50,000 in immediate assistance, along with access to vocational training, agricultural land, and other reintegration benefits.
Officials emphasised that the campaign&rsquo;s success lies in its dual approach &mdash; combining sustained security operations with community outreach and psychological support.
Over the past 18 months, Dantewada district has witnessed a steady stream of Maoist cadres renouncing violence and embracing the democratic mainstream, driven by the joint surrender and rehabilitation initiatives of the Government of India and the Government of Chhattisgarh.
Among those who laid down arms were 99 reward-listed Maoists, part of a larger group of over 390 individuals who chose to sever ties with the insurgency &mdash; from senior leaders to grassroots operatives entrenched in base areas.
The momentum continues under the Lon Varratu campaign, which has so far facilitated the surrender of 1,042 Maoists, including 267 with declared bounties. 
This figure spans 837 male and 205 female cadres, not only from Dantewada but also from adjoining districts such as Bastar, Bijapur, and Narayanpur &mdash; marking a significant shift in the region&rsquo;s security landscape and the growing appeal of reintegration over rebellion.
