Syria is facing its worst agricultural crisis in nearly four decades as a historic drought, compounded by years of conflict and economic collapse, pushes millions toward hunger, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned.
The 2024&ndash;25 season is the driest in 40 years, crippling both rain-fed and irrigated farming. More than 75 per cent of rain-fed farmland has been hit, with rainfall deficits reaching 69 per cent in key areas, FAO officials said. Even irrigated lands are struggling due to water shortages, power cuts, and broken infrastructure.
&ldquo;This dual shock to crops and livestock is unprecedented,&rdquo; said Pirro-Tomaso Perri, FAO program officer. Wheat output in 2025 is projected at just 900,000&ndash;1.1 million tonnes far below the 4 million tonnes needed leaving a massive deficit.
Over 14 million Syrians are already food insecure, with 5.5 million at risk of sliding deeper into hunger. The drought has devastated pasturelands, doubled fodder prices, and forced herders to sell off flocks. Families returning to rural areas also face destroyed irrigation networks and limited inputs.
FAO has launched a $286.7 million Emergency and Recovery Plan (2025&ndash;27) to support 9.7 million people with drought-tolerant seeds, livestock feed, veterinary services, and irrigation rehabilitation. But only $66 million is currently sought for immediate drought relief, and funding gaps threaten to derail recovery.
&ldquo;Emergency action is needed now to save the next harvest,&rdquo; Perri warned. &ldquo;The window for action is closing rapidly.&rdquo;

The Kremlin confirmed that while Russia and Ukraine remain in contact, no date has been set for the next round of peace talks. Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that discussions continue at the level of negotiating groups, but productive talks require thorough preparation.
&ldquo;We cannot yet name the exact dates of a new round of negotiations in Istanbul,&rdquo; Peskov told reporters. He emphasised that dialogue must continue to ensure meaningful outcomes, adding that any talks at higher levels must be well-prepared.
On European involvement in Ukraine, Peskov stressed Russia&rsquo;s opposition to the idea of deploying European troops, saying, &ldquo;We have a negative attitude.&rdquo; He added that NATO&rsquo;s expansion into Ukraine was one of the root causes of the ongoing conflict.
Earlier, Russian aide Yury Ushakov revealed that Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump recently discussed supporting direct Moscow-Kyiv negotiations. Trump even announced plans for a trilateral meeting involving himself, Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The leaders spoke on August 15 in Alaska, with top diplomats including Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also present. Trump later described the step as an &ldquo;early move&rdquo; toward ending a war that has lasted nearly four years.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Wednesday launched India&rsquo;s first National Biofoundry Network, marking a milestone in the country&rsquo;s biotechnology journey. The launch coincided with one year of the BioE3 Policy (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment &amp; Employment).
Singh said India&rsquo;s bioeconomy has grown from $10 billion in 2014 to $165.7 billion in 2024, and is on track to reach $300 billion by 2030. He called the initiative a step toward making biotechnology a key driver of economic growth, sustainability, and job creation.
At the core of the programme is the BioE3 Challenge for Youth, themed &ldquo;Design Microbes, Molecules &amp; More&rdquo;. The nationwide competition invites school students, researchers, startups, and innovators to develop safe, sustainable biotech solutions across health, agriculture, environment, and industry.
Every month from October 2025, the top 10 winning projects will receive ₹1 lakh in prize money, recognition, and mentoring. Up to 100 awardees will be eligible for ₹25 lakh in funding via BIRAC to convert ideas into proof-of-concept, along with incubation support at BRIC+ institutions.
The initiative is anchored in the DESIGN framework&mdash;Define needs, Evidence-first, Sustainability, Integration, Go-to-market, and Net-positive impact. Officials said it will empower youth, foster grassroots innovation, and strengthen India&rsquo;s path to a self-reliant bioeconomy.

The Union Cabinet has cleared the Ministry of Youth Affairs &amp; Sports&rsquo; proposal to submit India&rsquo;s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Along with the bid, the Cabinet also sanctioned the signing of the Host City Collaboration Agreement and approved the provision of necessary guarantees by various ministries and departments.&nbsp;
Should the bid be successful, the Centre will extend financial assistance to the Gujarat government for organising the event.
According to the plan, athletes from 72 participating nations will compete in the Games. The scale of the event is expected to attract not only players but also coaches, officials, tourists, and media representatives, significantly benefiting trade and services in the host city.
Ahmedabad has been identified as the prospective venue owing to its modern sports infrastructure. The Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket ground in the world, has already demonstrated its organisational capacity by hosting the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final.
&ldquo;Athletes from across the Commonwealth will converge in Ahmedabad, and this will allow India to showcase its world-class sporting infrastructure and hospitality,&rdquo; a senior government official said.
The Games are projected to generate thousands of employment opportunities in fields such as sports science, logistics, event management, broadcasting, IT, and communications. Officials emphasised that the event would open professional avenues while inspiring the youth to pursue sports more seriously.
&ldquo;Beyond the immediate sporting aspect, hosting the Commonwealth Games would leave a lasting legacy. It will boost tourism, create jobs, and inspire millions of young Indians to embrace sports,&rdquo; an official statement noted.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Such a globally prestigious event will foster a strong sense of national pride and unity.&rdquo;
If India&rsquo;s bid succeeds, it will mark the nation&rsquo;s second turn as host of the Commonwealth Games, following New Delhi&rsquo;s edition in 2010.

The Goods and Services Tax Council, scheduled to meet on September 3, will likely discuss ending the compensation cess by October 31, ahead of schedule.&nbsp;
The GST compensation cess was set to end on March 31, 2026. 
Discussions, however, have started to conclude the cess collection earlier, as the loans taken during the Covid-19 pandemic to compensate states for revenue shortfalls are approaching full repayment, according to multiple media reports.
The repayment is expected to be completed around October 18, but the government may extend the levy until the end of October for smooth operations.
Reports citing government sources indicated that the cess collection may result in a surplus of about ₹ 2,000&ndash;3,000 crore to be shared equally between the Centre and the states.
The law mandated the cess for compensation for only five years, as states worried they would lose tax revenue when GST was introduced in 2017. 
So the compensation cess was levied to make up for the shortfall of state revenue.
The Centre borrowed ₹2.69 lakh crore on behalf of the states and provided it to them as loans to assist with financial management.
However, the levy had been extended from June 2022 until March 2026 to service loans taken during the pandemic when revenues fell significantly. 
As per the Goods and Services Tax (Compensation to States) Act, 2017, the cess collection will have to end once the repayment of loans is finished.
The Finance Ministry has sent its proposal to the GST Council for two GST rates of 5% and 18% across all goods, which will replace the existing four slab structure.

It all seems fine until the CD in which they stored their video gets stolen along with the CD player.

The film has been mainly shot in Rishikesh and was wrapped in April 2024. It is directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa, who is known for the Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer &ldquo;Dream Girl&rdquo; and its follow-up &ldquo;Dream Girl 2&rdquo;.

This is Triptii&rsquo;s 2nd film after the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer &lsquo;Animal&rsquo;. Earlier, her &lsquo;Bad Newz&rsquo; emerged as a hit, and now &lsquo;Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video&rsquo; looks set to bring her a hattrick.
Following this, she has &ldquo;Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3&rdquo; and &ldquo;Dhadak 2&rdquo; in the pipeline. She is also set to headline Vishal Bhardwaj&rsquo;s highly anticipated untitled action drama, co-starring Shahid Kapoor.
