In a dramatic legal development, the Maharashtra government announced it will challenge the Bombay High Court&rsquo;s acquittal of 12 men convicted in the 2006 Mumbai train bombings, which killed 187 people and injured over 800.
Calling the High Court verdict &ldquo;shocking,&rdquo; Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that the state will approach the Supreme Court. &ldquo;I have reviewed the court&rsquo;s decision and consulted with legal experts. We will challenge this verdict,&rdquo; he told reporters.
On Monday, a division bench of Justices Anil Kilor and S. Chandak overturned the convictions handed down by a special court in 2015, citing unreliable evidence and procedural lapses. Five of the acquitted had been sentenced to death, and seven to life imprisonment.
The blasts occurred on July 11, 2006, during rush hour on Mumbai&rsquo;s suburban trains, with seven pressure-cooker bombs laced with RDX and ammonium nitrate. The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) claimed the attack was plotted by Pakistan's ISI and executed by Lashkar-e-Toiba operatives with help from SIMI.
However, the High Court found the prosecution&rsquo;s case weak, raising concerns over custodial confessions, forced statements, and flawed investigation methods. The acquitted men had already spent 19 years in jail.
With the state preparing to escalate the case to the Supreme Court, the judgment has sparked renewed debate over terror probes and judicial accountability in India.
