Kyiv came under its most intense aerial assault since the war began, as Russia unleashed over 800 drones and missiles, striking deep into the heart of Ukraine&rsquo;s capital. At least two people were confirmed dead after a wave of explosive drones targeted the city, including a direct hit on the Cabinet of Ministers&rsquo; headquarters, a building previously untouched during the conflict.
Eyewitnesses reported plumes of smoke rising from the government complex as emergency crews rushed to the scene. Police cordoned off the area while fire trucks and ambulances attempted to contain the damage.
&ldquo;For the first time, the government building was damaged by an enemy attack, including the roof and upper floors,&rdquo; said Ukraine&rsquo;s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. &ldquo;We will restore the buildings, but lost lives cannot be returned.&rdquo;
Military officials described the barrage as unprecedented. &ldquo;Sunday&rsquo;s assault was the largest Russian drone strike since the full-scale invasion began,&rdquo; said Yuriy Ihnat, spokesperson for Ukraine&rsquo;s Air Force.
The attack also involved at least 13 missiles of various types, intensifying fears of a new escalation in Moscow&rsquo;s strategy of targeting critical and symbolic sites. Until now, Russia had largely avoided direct strikes on Kyiv&rsquo;s central government institutions.
With Kyiv&rsquo;s Cabinet building, the nerve center of Ukraine&rsquo;s administration now damaged, the assault marks a symbolic as well as strategic shift in the war. The attack has heightened concerns over civilian safety and the Kremlin&rsquo;s willingness to expand the scope of its campaign.
