Shubman Gill has announced his leadership era in style, rewriting history during the second Test against England at Edgbaston. The 25-year-old, who recently took over the Test captaincy following Rohit Sharma&rsquo;s retirement, smashed an unbeaten 168, the highest individual Test score by an Indian captain at the iconic English venue.
Gill&rsquo;s masterclass eclipsed Virat Kohli&rsquo;s famous 149 from 2018, long regarded as a benchmark for Indian excellence on English soil. Not only did Gill break the record for an Indian captain at Edgbaston, but he also became the highest-scoring Indian batter ever at the venue.
This was his second century of the series, following a solid 147 at Headingley. In just his second match as skipper, Gill looks to be thriving under pressure. He is now only the second Indian Test captain after Mohammad Azharuddin (179 at Manchester in 1990) to score 150-plus in England.
In partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (89), Gill helped India reach 419/6 at lunch on Day 2, building a monumental 203-run stand for the sixth wicket. With rain expected over the weekend, India will aim for a 500-plus total to control the match.
