The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that Richie Richardson will replace Andy Pycroft as match referee for Pakistan&rsquo;s upcoming Asia Cup group match against the UAE. This follows a compromise reached with the International Cricket Council (ICC) amid escalating tension over the &ldquo;handshake row.&rdquo;
The controversy began after Pakistan&rsquo;s defeat to India, when Indian players declined to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts, citing tribute to victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. PCB protested to the ICC, accusing Pycroft of actions violating the spirit of the game.
ICC initially rejected PCB&rsquo;s demand to remove Pycroft. But after closed-door discussions, the ICC agreed to Richardson officiating Pakistan&rsquo;s match vs the UAE. Pycroft will no longer referee Pakistan&rsquo;s fixtures moving forward, including those in the Super 4 stage.
Pakistan had threatened to pull out of the tournament if the match referee issue wasn&rsquo;t addressed. The financial implications were notable, with the PCB at risk of losing roughly USD 16 million by withdrawal.
Uncertainty spread through team logistics. Pakistan cancelled its pre-match press conference, and training schedules shifted. Meanwhile, India proceeded with planned preparations for its upcoming matches.
