India&rsquo;s shooting star Pranjali Prashant Dhumal captured the gold medal in the women&rsquo;s 25m pistol event at the Deaflympics in Tokyo, marking her third medal of the Games. She has already won gold in the mixed pistol event with Abhinav Deshwal and silver in the women&rsquo;s air pistol category.
In the 25m pistol final, Ukraine&rsquo;s Halyna Mosina took silver while Korea&rsquo;s Jeon Jiwon secured bronze. India&rsquo;s Anuya Prasad, the air pistol gold medallist, narrowly missed the podium and finished fourth.
Pranjali advanced to the final after delivering a historic performance in qualification, setting a new world and Deaflympic record with a score of 573/600.
A day earlier, Abhinav Deshwal claimed India&rsquo;s 15th shooting medal at the Games, winning gold in the men&rsquo;s 25m pistol while also setting a qualification record. With these victories, India has surpassed its previous best tally of 16 medals, achieved at the Brazil Deaflympics 2021 (held in 2022).
With two days of competition still remaining, India is poised to improve its overall count even further.
Meanwhile, Loma Swain created history by winning India&rsquo;s first-ever Karate medal at the Deaflympics, clinching bronze in the women&rsquo;s Kumite -50 kg category.
India sent its largest-ever contingent of 111 members, including 73 athletes and 38 coaches, to the Tokyo Deaflympics. The Games are hosted by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD), recognised by the International Olympic Committee and operating independently since 1924. India has been participating in Deaflympic events since 1965. At the previous Games in Brazil, India won a record 16 medals and finished ninth among 77 nations. Over the years, India has accumulated a total of 26 gold, 9 silver, and 17 bronze medals in the Deaflympics.
