Legalized sports betting has exploded since the 2018 Supreme Court ruling overturning the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. Betting is now legal in 38 states, generating over $10 billion in revenue through online apps and retail platforms, while professional leagues profit from data partnerships that provide stats essential for prop bets. Yet, experts warn that with billions on the line, manipulation and insider exploitation remain persistent risks, especially when leagues and players intersect with betting markets.
Prop bets, such as those involving the number of points, rebounds, or assists a player achieves, are central to this probe. In March 2023, Rozier&rsquo;s abbreviated performance in a Charlotte Hornets game triggered unusual betting patterns, prompting federal investigators to probe potential manipulations. The case has reignited debates on regulation, ethics, and the potential dark side of the multimillion-dollar sports gambling industry.
