Former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas is on course to become the first uncapped Indian cricketer to lead the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The 45-year-old has emerged as the frontrunner for the president&rsquo;s post after a decisive meeting among board administrators in New Delhi.
The deadline for nominations closes on Sunday, with the elections scheduled for September 28. Traditionally, the BCCI president has been chosen unopposed, and in recent years, the post has been reserved for former cricketers like Sourav Ganguly and Roger Binny.
Who is Mithun Manhas?
Manhas debuted in the 1997/98 season but could not break into the Indian national team in an era dominated by stalwarts such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, and Sourav Ganguly. Despite this, he carved out a prolific domestic career, amassing 9714 runs in 157 first-class matches at an average of over 45, including 27 centuries. His 8554 Ranji Trophy runs rank seventh-highest in history.
As Delhi captain, Manhas played a pivotal role in the team&rsquo;s Ranji Trophy triumph in 2007/08, ending a long championship drought. He was a leader in the dressing room and mentored young talents, including Virat Kohli, during their formative years.
Stint in the IPL and Coaching Roles
Manhas featured in 55 IPL matches across seven seasons, playing for Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors, and Chennai Super Kings under MS Dhoni. He later transitioned into coaching, working as assistant coach for Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Gujarat Titans, and also served as batting consultant for Bangladesh U-19.
Administrative Experience
Beyond his playing and coaching career, Manhas also served as director of cricket operations with the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), adding crucial administrative experience to his resume.
If elected, Manhas will script history as the first uncapped cricketer to lead Indian cricket&rsquo;s most powerful governing body.
