In a dramatic turn, former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas has surged into pole position to become the next president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The development comes after senior administrators and decision-makers held a high-level meeting in New Delhi on Saturday to finalise candidates for the key posts ahead of the BCCI annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for September 28.
Among those considered were Manhas and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) president Raghuram Bhatt. Current indications suggest Manhas is the leading contender to succeed Roger Binny as BCCI president, while Bhatt is expected to secure one of the vacant board positions.
Manhas, though never capped for India, brings vast domestic experience, having played 157 first-class matches with 9714 runs, including 27 centuries. He has also featured in the Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, and Pune Warriors, besides working as director of cricket operations with the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association.
Meanwhile, the BCCI is also preparing for changes in its structure. Former India wicketkeeper Kiran More is tipped for a board position, while former cricketers Pragyan Ojha and RP Singh are set to join the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, replacing S Sharath and Subroto Banerjee. Their first assignment will be the upcoming home Test series against the West Indies.
The board is additionally seeking a new IPL chairman as Arun Dhumal is expected to enter a mandatory cooling-off period after completing six years. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is also keen to increase the representation of former sportspersons in the BCCI, strengthening its influence in the country&rsquo;s richest sports body.
