Middlesex have secured the services of England fast bowler Olly Stone on a short-term loan from Nottinghamshire as they prepare for the decisive final stretch of the County Championship season.
The 31-year-old pacer will be available for Middlesex&rsquo;s three remaining Division Two fixtures, beginning with the clash against Derbyshire at Lord&rsquo;s on Tuesday. The match also marks Stone&rsquo;s return to first-class cricket after a lengthy recovery from a knee injury suffered earlier in the summer.
Stone, who has represented England across all three formats, has eased back into competitive action with four appearances for Notts Outlaws in the T20 Blast and two outings for London Spirit in The Hundred. His short stint at Middlesex provides him a chance to build up red-ball rhythm ahead of the winter.
Alan Coleman, Middlesex&rsquo;s Director of Cricket, hailed the signing as timely: &ldquo;As we reach the end of the season, the rigours inevitably take their toll on the fast-bowling unit. To bring in someone of Olly&rsquo;s proven international quality is a huge bonus. He will add not only quality but also vast amounts of experience, which will benefit our younger players as we push to finish the season strongly.&rdquo;
Stone&rsquo;s career record reflects his pedigree. Since making his debut for Northamptonshire in 2011, he has taken 174 wickets in 54 first-class matches, including career-best figures of 8 for 80. For England, he has claimed 17 wickets in five Tests at an average of 23.52, alongside nine wickets in limited-overs internationals.
Nottinghamshire Head Coach Peter Moores endorsed the loan move as a vital step in Stone&rsquo;s comeback. &ldquo;This is a great opportunity for Olly to get some competitive overs under his belt with the red ball. We want to make sure he gets miles back in the legs after some impressive white-ball spells.
