The Test series between India and England began on 20 June at Headingley. On the very first day of the series, India posted a strong total of 359 runs for the loss of three wickets. Two Indian batters scored centuries on the opening day. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed after scoring 101, while captain Shubman Gill remains unbeaten on 127 at the crease.
This marks only the third occasion in Indian Test history where two Indian batters have scored centuries on the first day of a tour. Here&rsquo;s a look back at the three historic instances:
<h3 data-start="798" data-end="854">1) Tendulkar and Sehwag in South Africa (2001):</h3>
In November 2001, during India&rsquo;s tour of South Africa, Sachin Tendulkar and debutant Virender Sehwag registered centuries on the first day of the Test in Bloemfontein.
India had found themselves in early trouble, losing four wickets for just 68 runs. However, the pair stabilised the innings with Sehwag scoring 105 and Tendulkar adding 155, guiding India to a total of 379. Despite their efforts, South Africa went on to win the match by nine wickets.
<h3 data-start="1325" data-end="1375">2) Dhawan and Pujara in Sri Lanka (2017):</h3>
The second such instance came in July 2017 at Galle, during the first Test against Sri Lanka.
India lost opener Abhinav Mukund early, but Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara added 253 runs for the second wicket. Dhawan played a blistering knock of 190, while Pujara contributed 153. Their partnership helped India reach a massive total of 600. India eventually won the match by 304 runs.
<h3 data-start="1782" data-end="1829">3) Jaiswal and Gill in England (2025):</h3>
The latest addition to this rare feat occurred at Headingley in June 2025, as India faced England. Shubman Gill, in his very first match as Test captain, led from the front with an unbeaten 127.
He was well supported by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 101, as India took firm control on the opening day. The performance puts India in a strong position heading into Day Two.
