Cricket bodies hosting matches in Gujarat, including the ICC, BCCI and IPL franchises, will now be required to pay for police security services, following a new directive issued by the Gujarat Home Department. The decision introduces a structured fee model to address the long-standing issue of police deployment during high-profile cricket events without a defined cost recovery system.
As per media reports, under the new regulation, organisers must pay Rs 25 lakh for each Test or One Day International match and Rs 10 lakh for T20 fixtures. These charges cover police presence both within the stadium and across surrounding areas. Event organisers will also be responsible for supplying food and bottled water to officers on duty, and setting up control rooms when needed.
Should matches require enhanced security&mdash;for instance, during VIP attendance or in response to threat alerts&mdash;the cost may rise by up to 25 per cent. The police will continue to supply essential technical equipment, including metal detectors, scanners, and barricades, as part of their operational duties.
The full amount is to be paid within 30 days of the match. Failure to do so will incur interest, in line with standard financial provisions applied by the government.
The policy is aimed at formalising financial contributions by event organisers towards security arrangements and is likely to influence similar decisions in other parts of the country as states seek to manage the demands placed on public resources during major events.
Gujarat has increasingly become a major venue for international and domestic cricket, with matches spanning all formats hosted regularly across the state. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, recognised as the largest cricket stadium globally, has seen landmark events such as the ICC World Cup Final 2023, India-Pakistan matches, and IPL playoffs.&nbsp;
Additional stadiums in Vadodara and Motera have also hosted women's matches and Ranji Trophy games.
Since their IPL debut in 2022, the Gujarat Titans have drawn large crowds and brought a steady stream of matches to the state, further increasing the need for robust security arrangements. As Gujarat&rsquo;s cricketing calendar continues to expand, local authorities have routinely had to manage significant deployments of police and resources.
By requiring organisers to contribute to these efforts financially, the Home Department intends to ensure that operational demands on police forces are met more sustainably during large-scale sporting events.
