India captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the remainder of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens after sustaining a neck spasm during play on Day 2.
Gill, 26, retired hurt on four and did not return to the field. 
Ahead of Day 3, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Gill had been taken to hospital for medical examination and remains under observation.
&ldquo;Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day&rsquo;s play. He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team,&rdquo; the board said in a statement.
The injury occurred in the first session on Friday when Gill executed a sweep shot off Simon Harmer in the 35th over. 
Immediately after the stroke, he clutched his neck in visible pain. 
Team physio Kamlesh Jain attended to him, but with Gill unable to move his neck freely, he walked off the field.
Rishabh Pant took over as stand-in captain for the remainder of the day.
Broadcast visuals later showed that Gill had been struggling with neck discomfort even before the start of play, performing stretching drills with evident pain.
At stumps, Gill was stretchered out of the stadium wearing a neck brace and admitted to a private hospital designated for the match. 
He was accompanied by the Indian team doctor, a security liaison officer, and his father, Lakhwinder Gill.
This is not the first time the Indian captain has faced similar trouble. 
Gill missed the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru in October 2024 and the second T20I against Sri Lanka in July 2024 due to a stiff neck.
