Indian cricket team head coach and former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Gautam Gambhir has received death threats via email, prompting a police investigation and heightened security concerns. The Delhi Police confirmed on Thursday that a complaint was lodged at the Rajinder Nagar police station after Gambhir reported receiving two threatening emails.
The emails were reportedly sent on April 22, the same day that terrorists opened fire on civilians in Kashmir&rsquo;s Pahalgam region, killing 26 people, most of whom were tourists.&nbsp;
According to officials from the Rajinder Nagar Police Station and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Delhi), Gambhir approached the police on Wednesday to seek immediate action and requested the registration of a First Information Report (FIR).
The threats, which originated from a suspicious Gmail account, included the chilling message &ldquo;IKillU&rdquo; and were sent in two separate emails&mdash;one in the afternoon and another in the evening. According to a police source, an investigation has been launched into the matter.
A national daily reported that the threat emails were purportedly sent by a group identifying itself as &ldquo;ISIS Kashmir.&rdquo; Gambhir has called upon law enforcement authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of himself and his family.
This is not the first time Gambhir has faced such threats. In November 2021, while he was serving as a sitting Member of Parliament, he received a similar email. Another set of threats followed in 2022, leading authorities to tighten his security arrangements.
In the wake of the Pahalgam attack, Gambhir expressed his condolences on social media. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, &ldquo;Praying for the families of the deceased. Those responsible for this will pay. India will strike.&rdquo;
The attack in Pahalgam is regarded as one of the deadliest in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama terror incident.
