World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz battled past Damir Dzumhur 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to secure his place in the third round of the 2025 Cincinnati Masters on Monday.
The Spaniard raced through the opening set in just 28 minutes, but errors and a dip in intensity saw him lose the second. Dzumhur, ranked World No. 56, capitalised by charging the net and dictating rallies to level the match.
Alcaraz regrouped in the deciding set, finding the precision and power needed to seal victory in one hour and 41 minutes. &ldquo;It was just a rollercoaster&hellip; I&rsquo;m happy to get the win and will use the rest day to regain confidence,&rdquo; Alcaraz said.
This was Alcaraz&rsquo;s first match since losing to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final. Both players are vying for the ATP Year-End No. 1 ranking, with Alcaraz holding a 1,500-point lead in the ATP Live Race To Turin.
The 22-year-old has already captured five titles in 2025, including Masters 1000 triumphs in Monte-Carlo and Rome. His best result in Cincinnati came in 2023, when he lost a thrilling three-set final to Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz, chasing his eighth Masters 1000 crown, will next face Hamad Medjedovic.
