India has officially secured the hosting rights for the 2029 edition of the World Police &amp; Fire Games (WPFG), which will be held across three cities in Gujarat&mdash;Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ekta Nagar in Kevadia. The announcement was made by the state government on Thursday, following a successful bid presented to the California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF), the governing body of the event, on June 25 in Birmingham, Alabama.
The WPFG, a biennial global sporting event, brings together athletes from the police, fire, customs, and correctional services. The 2029 edition is expected to draw participation from over 10,000 competitors representing more than 70 countries.
This development marks a first for South Asia, as India becomes the region&rsquo;s inaugural host since the Games began in 1985. Previous editions have been held in countries such as the United States, Australia, Canada, China, and the Netherlands.
The bidding journey spanned over 15 months and involved detailed scrutiny of technical and administrative capabilities. Representing Gujarat during the final presentation were Ashwini Kumar, Principal Secretary of Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities, and M Thennarasan, Principal Secretary of Urban Development and Urban Housing.&nbsp;
Their submission demonstrated the state&rsquo;s preparedness and organisational commitment to deliver a major international sports event.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel shared the development on social media, stating, &ldquo;India has won the bid to host the 2029 World Police &amp; Fire Games (WPFG) in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar &amp; Ekta Nagar, following a comprehensive bid presentation to the WPFG Federation in Birmingham, USA.&rdquo;
He further noted, &ldquo;This global victory reflects the visionary leadership of Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi and Hon'ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, and is a big step towards making Ahmedabad the sporting capital of India.&rdquo;
Gujarat&rsquo;s Minister of State for Sports, Harsh Sanghavi, expressed enthusiasm over the announcement, declaring, &ldquo;Gujarat is ready to make its mark on the world sports map! Let&rsquo;s get ready to host the world!&rdquo;
Following the successful conduct of the 36th National Games in 2022, Gujarat aims to build upon its existing infrastructure, which already includes over 15 functioning venues. The state intends to enhance these facilities with internationally benchmarked operational systems and overlays to meet the requirements of the Games.
According to the state government, the event further aligns with Gujarat&rsquo;s long-term vision of establishing itself as a premier destination for high-performance, multi-disciplinary sports competitions in India.
