A SpiceJet flight from Kandla, Gujarat, to Mumbai lost an outer wheel shortly after take-off but successfully completed its journey to the financial capital, the airline confirmed on Friday.
The incident involved a Q400 aircraft, which reportedly lost the outer wheel after departing Kandla.
&ldquo;On September 12, an outer wheel of a SpiceJet Q400 aircraft operating from Kandla to Mumbai was found at the runway after take-off. The aircraft continued its journey to Mumbai and landed safely,&rdquo; said a SpiceJet spokesperson.
The airline added that following a smooth landing, the plane taxied to the terminal under its own power, and all passengers disembarked normally.
This comes a day after another SpiceJet flight, bound for Kathmandu, faced a suspected tailpipe fire at Delhi airport but returned safely to the bay. Flight SG041, operated with a Boeing 737-8 aircraft, was scheduled for a morning departure but experienced a delay of over four hours. The airline stated that another aircraft on the ground reported a suspected tailpipe fire, prompting the pilots to return as a precaution.
&ldquo;No warnings or indications were observed in the cockpit, but the pilots decided to return as a precautionary safety measure,&rdquo; the airline said.
A tailpipe, the exhaust pipe of a jet engine, can experience an internal fire within the engine&rsquo;s normal gas flow, also known as a tailpipe fire. Despite the scare, officials confirmed that the aircraft was safe and cleared to resume operations after thorough checks.
Meanwhile, SpiceJet reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 234 crore in Q1 FY26, a sharp decline from a net profit of Rs 158 crore in the same quarter last year (Q1 FY25). The drop came as operational revenues fell 34.4 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1,120 crore from Rs 1,708 crore, according to its stock exchange filing.
The airline attributed the losses to costs associated with grounded aircraft and expenses for bringing them back into service. It also cited geopolitical tensions with a neighboring country and airspace restrictions in key markets, which affected leisure travel demand.
