A sharp exchange unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi clashed during the ongoing debate on electoral reforms. The tension rose when Gandhi interrupted Shah and demanded a direct discussion on his recent press conferences, challenging the minister to debate their contents.
Shah refused to alter the sequence of his speech, asserting that he would address every issue but would not allow anyone to dictate how he should structure his remarks. Gandhi later criticised the response, calling it defensive.
The confrontation came hours after Shah addressed Gandhi&rsquo;s earlier accusations regarding alleged voter list manipulation. He dismissed the claims as baseless, highlighting that the Election Commission had already clarified the matter. Shah referred to Gandhi&rsquo;s November 5 press conference, where the Congress leader claimed that hundreds of voters were registered at a single address in Haryana.
According to Shah, the poll panel explained that the address referred to an ancestral one-acre property housing multiple families across generations, all sharing a common house number due to an old numbering system that predates the current administration. He emphasised that the property was not fraudulent.
Wednesday marked the second day of the Lower House&rsquo;s discussion on electoral reforms. The debate proceeded after a prolonged standoff, with both sides eventually agreeing to begin the discussion following the completion of deliberations on Vande Mataram. Parliament has allocated a total of ten hours for the reforms debate.
