Pakistan&rsquo;s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has reignited tensions with India by declaring that the Shimla Agreement is now obsolete. During a televised debate, Asif said that the relationship between India and Pakistan has returned to the state it was in 1948, adding that the Line of Control (LOC) should now be considered a mere ceasefire line rather than a boundary of peace.
He asserted that the Shimla Agreement has lost its relevance and should be regarded as a &ldquo;dead document.&rdquo; Asif suggested that discussions should resume based on the 1948 ceasefire conditions to redefine the LOC&rsquo;s status.
Taking a dig at Indian leadership, Asif compared the current political climate to the era of Jawaharlal Nehru, saying that today&rsquo;s leadership focuses on confrontation and dominance. He claimed that several South Asian nations are urging Pakistan to seek peace, but tensions remain unchanged.
Despite his aggressive tone, Asif maintained that Pakistan does not seek war but will respond firmly if provoked. His statement follows India&rsquo;s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, to which Pakistan responded by halting the Shimla Agreement.
Analysts view Asif&rsquo;s remarks as a sign of further deterioration in India&ndash;Pakistan relations, especially at a time when diplomatic engagement between the two nations remains frozen.
