New Delhi: Welcoming the Goods &amp; Services Tax (GST) Council&rsquo;s reduction in tax rates on essential cancer drugs, experts on Tuesday said that it is a crucial step and will make life-saving medicines more affordable and accessible to patients.&nbsp;
In a significant development for cancer patients across India, the GST Council at its 54th meeting held in New Delhi, on Monday evening decided to slash the GST rate from 12% to 5% on key cancer medications. This includes drugs Trastuzumab Deruxtecan, Osimertinib, and Durvalumab.
&ldquo;This move marks a crucial step in making life-saving treatments more affordable for patients battling cancer,&rdquo; said Dr Pritam Kataria, Consultant, Medical Oncology, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital.
&ldquo;With the incidence of cancers rising significantly, this is a welcome move, and will further increase the confidence of patients in the treatment system,&rdquo; he added.
Cancer treatments can get expensive due to the long duration of treatment and the high cost of drugs, especially in cases where the drug needs to be imported as in the case of immunotherapy or targeted therapy.
&ldquo;The slash in GST will allow more patients in India to receive the standard care. With the new treatment coming in reducing the side effects of therapy and improved responses this will improve the outcome in the patient,&rdquo; Kataria said.
The three drugs &mdash; Trastuzumab deruxtecan are used for breast cancer, Osimertinib for lung cancer drug for EGFR mutation, and Durvalumab for lung and biliary tract cancers. Deruxtecan drug can be used in all cancers with Her2 positive gene.
The government had also exempted customs duty on these three cancer drugs in the Union Budget 2024-25.
&ldquo;We welcome the GST Council&rsquo;s decision to lower the GST on cancer drugs to 5%. With the increasing burden of chronic diseases in India, this is a move toward making life-saving drugs accessible and improving health outcomes,&rdquo; said Sudarshan Jain, Secretary General, of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance.
&ldquo;This much-needed GST cut can also improve access to advanced cancer treatments, reduce the financial burden on patients and their families, and potentially improve treatment outcomes by allowing more patients to benefit from these drugs,&rdquo; said Dr Ashish Gupta, Medical Oncologist and Chief of Medical Oncology at Unique Hospital Cancer Centre in New Delhi.

નવી દિલ્હી: ગુડ્સ એન્ડ સર્વિસ ટેક્સ (જીએસટી) કાઉન્સિલ દ્વારા કેન્સરની આવશ્યક દવાઓ પરના કર દરોમાં ઘટાડોનું સ્વાગત કરતા, નિષ્ણાતોએ મંગળવારે જણાવ્યું હતું કે તે એક નિર્ણાયક પગલું છે અને જીવન બચાવતી દવાઓ દર્દીઓ માટે વધુ સસ્તું અને સુલભ બનાવશે.
સમગ્ર ભારતમાં કેન્સરના દર્દીઓ માટેના નોંધપાત્ર વિકાસમાં, GST કાઉન્સિલે સોમવારે સાંજે નવી દિલ્હીમાં યોજાયેલી તેની 54મી બેઠકમાં મુખ્ય કેન્સરની દવાઓ પર GST દર 12% થી ઘટાડીને 5% કરવાનો નિર્ણય લીધો હતો. આમાં ટ્રાસ્ટુઝુમાબ ડેરક્સટેકન, ઓસિમેર્ટિનિબ અને દુર્વાલુમબ દવાઓનો સમાવેશ થાય છે.
સર એચએન રિલાયન્સ ફાઉન્ડેશન હોસ્પિટલના મેડિકલ ઓન્કોલોજીના કન્સલ્ટન્ટ ડો. પ્રિતમ કટારિયાએ જણાવ્યું હતું કે, "આ પગલું કેન્સર સામે લડતા દર્દીઓ માટે જીવનરક્ષક સારવારને વધુ સસ્તું બનાવવા માટે એક નિર્ણાયક પગલું છે."
"કેન્સરની ઘટનાઓ નોંધપાત્ર રીતે વધી રહી છે, આ એક આવકારદાયક પગલું છે, અને દર્દીઓનો સારવાર પદ્ધતિમાં વિશ્વાસ વધુ વધારશે," તેમણે ઉમેર્યું.
સારવારની લાંબી અવધિ અને દવાઓની ઊંચી કિંમતને કારણે કેન્સરની સારવાર મોંઘી બની શકે છે, ખાસ કરીને એવા કિસ્સામાં કે જ્યાં દવાને ઇમ્યુનોથેરાપી અથવા લક્ષિત ઉપચારના કિસ્સામાં આયાત કરવાની જરૂર પડે છે.
&ldquo;GSTમાં ઘટાડાથી ભારતમાં વધુ દર્દીઓને પ્રમાણભૂત સંભાળ પ્રાપ્ત થશે. થેરાપીની આડઅસરો અને સુધારેલા પ્રતિભાવોને ઘટાડવા માટે નવી સારવાર આવવાથી દર્દીના પરિણામમાં સુધારો થશે,&rdquo; કટારિયાએ જણાવ્યું હતું.
ત્રણ દવાઓ - ટ્રાસ્ટુઝુમબ ડેરક્સટેકનનો ઉપયોગ સ્તન કેન્સર માટે, ઓસિમેર્ટિનિબનો ઉપયોગ EGFR પરિવર્તન માટે ફેફસાના કેન્સરની દવા માટે અને દુર્વાલુમબનો ફેફસાં અને પિત્તરસ સંબંધી માર્ગના કેન્સર માટે થાય છે. Deruxtecan દવાનો ઉપયોગ Her2 પોઝિટિવ જનીન ધરાવતા તમામ કેન્સરમાં થઈ શકે છે.
સરકારે કેન્દ્રીય બજેટ 2024-25માં કેન્સરની આ ત્રણ દવાઓ પર કસ્ટમ ડ્યુટીમાં પણ મુક્તિ આપી હતી.
"કેન્સરની દવાઓ પર GST ઘટાડીને 5% કરવાના GST કાઉન્સિલના નિર્ણયને અમે આવકારીએ છીએ. ભારતમાં દીર્ઘકાલીન રોગોના વધતા બોજ સાથે, આ જીવન બચાવતી દવાઓને સુલભ બનાવવા અને આરોગ્યના પરિણામોમાં સુધારો કરવા તરફનું એક પગલું છે,&rdquo; ભારતીય ફાર્માસ્યુટિકલ એલાયન્સના સેક્રેટરી જનરલ સુદર્શન જૈને જણાવ્યું હતું.
મેડિકલ ઓન્કોલોજિસ્ટ અને ડૉ. આશિષ ગુપ્તાએ જણાવ્યું હતું કે, "આ અતિ-જરૂરી GST કટ અદ્યતન કેન્સરની સારવારની ઍક્સેસમાં પણ સુધારો કરી શકે છે, દર્દીઓ અને તેમના પરિવારો પરના નાણાકીય બોજને ઘટાડી શકે છે, અને વધુ દર્દીઓને આ દવાઓનો લાભ આપીને સંભવિત રીતે સારવારના પરિણામોમાં સુધારો કરી શકે છે." નવી દિલ્હીમાં યુનિક હોસ્પિટલ કેન્સર સેન્ટરમાં મેડિકલ ઓન્કોલોજીના ચીફ.
