As Pakistan assumes the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) this July through routine alphabetical rotation, India has seized the moment to spotlight Islamabad's role in cross-border terrorism&mdash;particularly its alleged involvement in the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu &amp; Kashmir.
India&rsquo;s response came through &ldquo;Operation Sindoor,&rdquo; launched after the brutal attack. Additionally, India inaugurated an exhibition titled &ldquo;The Human Cost of Terrorism&rdquo; near the main entrance of the UN building, where global diplomats enter&mdash;drawing direct attention to terrorism allegedly linked to Pakistan, including its past protection of Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of 9/11.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the display aims to name and shame those who perpetuate global terrorism and to urge a unified international stand against them.
While Pakistan takes on the rotating presidency of the UNSC, its power remains limited by procedural rules and diplomatic norms. The agenda for the month&mdash;known as the programme of work&mdash;must be adopted by consensus, although countries like Russia have disrupted this process in previous presidencies.
Pakistan, however, can organize high-level signature events and open debates on issues of its choosing. Pakistan's UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad will lead most sessions, with possible appearances by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.
In matters of global policy, Pakistan often aligns with China and Russia, particularly on controversial topics such as the Israel-Hamas conflict and US actions in Iran. At a recent UNSC emergency meeting on Iran, Pakistan condemned the US and Israeli strikes and co-sponsored a draft resolution with China and Russia, though it was ultimately overshadowed by other developments and expected to face a US veto.
On the Gaza conflict, Pakistan has firmly supported Palestine and frequently tries&mdash;unsuccessfully&mdash;to draw parallels between the Palestinian cause and the Kashmir issue in its UN speeches.
