India&rsquo;s tally of active COVID-19 cases has risen to 4,026, with the latest data from the Union Health Ministry confirming five new deaths within the past 24 hours. Kerala remains the worst-affected state, followed by Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, and West Bengal.
The active caseload, which stood at just 257 on May 22, increased sharply to 3,395 by the end of May before reaching its current total. Kerala, reporting 171 fresh infections, has seen its active cases climb to 1,416.&nbsp;
Maharashtra recorded 69 new cases, bringing its total to 494. Delhi added 124 infections, raising its active count to 393, while Gujarat reported 59 new cases, marking the steepest single-day increase in the country and pushing its total to 397. West Bengal documented 11 new cases, taking its active tally to 372.
Among the five newly reported fatalities, one each occurred in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, while Maharashtra accounted for two deaths. Kerala&rsquo;s deceased was an 80-year-old man suffering from severe pneumonia.&nbsp;
The fatalities in Maharashtra included a 70-year-old woman with diabetes and a 73-year-old woman with a history of both diabetes and hypertension. Tamil Nadu reported the death of a 69-year-old woman who had type 2 diabetes and Parkinson&rsquo;s disease. In West Bengal, a 43-year-old woman with acute coronary syndrome and kidney injury died.&nbsp;
The cumulative death toll linked to COVID-19 in India since January has now reached 37.
Commenting on the current spike, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director General Rajiv Behl stated that genome sequencing of samples collected from southern and western parts of the country suggests that Omicron sub-variants are responsible for the recent rise in infections.&nbsp;
&ldquo;We have been closely monitoring the situation. At this moment overall, we should monitor, be vigilant but there is no cause to worry,&rdquo; he said.
In a related development, the Delhi High Court noted that the "next COVID pandemic" remains a looming concern and called on the Central government to furnish details regarding its readiness, particularly in terms of sample collection, designated centres, and transport logistics.&nbsp;
Justice Girish Kathpalia remarked that while assurances of protocol implementation are welcome, responsible authorities must formally submit the necessary information on record.
