The Madhya Pradesh government has imposed a ban on the sale of Coldrif cough syrup after the deaths of several children in Chhindwara since September 7, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Saturday.
&ldquo;The deaths of children in Chhindwara due to Coldrif syrup are extremely tragic. The sale of this syrup has been banned across Madhya Pradesh. A similar ban is also being placed on other products of the company that manufactures the syrup,&rdquo; Yadav stated on X (formerly Twitter).
The syrup, manufactured by a Tamil Nadu-based pharmaceutical company, had been supplied to Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Puducherry. 
At least nine children reportedly died in Chhindwara, prompting health authorities to send 13 medicines, including Coldrif, for laboratory testing.
According to Madhya Pradesh Drug Controller D.K. Maurya, initial reports for antibiotic medicines showed no contamination in three of the 13 tested samples, including paracetamol. 
Based on these early results, officials had initially ruled out any direct link between the children&rsquo;s deaths and cough syrup contamination.
However, the government moved swiftly to ban Coldrif after fresh reports received on Saturday confirmed adulteration in the syrup.
&ldquo;We had sent 13 medicines, including two cough syrups, for testing after biopsy reports indicated possible kidney failure due to diethylene glycol exposure. Multiple agencies are involved in verifying the findings to ensure accuracy,&rdquo; Maurya said.
The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, with authorities tightening surveillance and quality checks on pediatric medicines in the wake of the tragedy.
