India has launched its first-ever animal stem cell biobank and dedicated laboratory, marking a milestone in veterinary science and regenerative medicine. Inaugurated at the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB) in Hyderabad, the facility aims to revolutionise treatments for livestock through advanced stem cell research and therapies.
Spread over 9,300 sq ft and built at a cost of Rs 1.85 crore, the cutting-edge lab features a stem cell culture unit, 3D bioprinter, bacterial culture lab, cryostorage, autoclave rooms, and advanced air handling systems. It promises breakthroughs in disease modelling, tissue engineering, and reproductive biotechnology.
Supported by the National Biopharma Mission of DBT&ndash;BIRAC, the facility will also store animal stem cells and their derivatives, bridging a critical gap in India&rsquo;s biotech capabilities. Until now, similar facilities existed only for human stem cells.
The launch also included the foundation stone-laying for a new hostel block and Type-IV quarters worth Rs 19.98 crore, aimed at supporting NIAB&rsquo;s researchers, faculty, and staff.
Alongside, a suite of innovative veterinary diagnostic tools was introduced to strengthen the &lsquo;One Health&rsquo; approach. These include:

Officials said these innovations will boost livestock productivity, support sustainable farming, and contribute to an &lsquo;Evergreen Revolution&rsquo; in animal husbandry. With agriculture contributing 18% to India&rsquo;s GDP and supporting 60% of the workforce, such technological advances are expected to yield high economic returns and strengthen food security.
