Biomedical engineers at IIT-BHU have developed cost-effective potassium ferric oxalate nanoparticles (KFeOx-NPs) that prevent blood clotting and may revolutionise the treatment of thrombotic disorders.
These nanoparticles work by binding to calcium ions in blood, thereby stopping the formation of fibrin, the protein essential for clotting. The team demonstrated their success in live mice, where intravenously injected nanoparticles prolonged clotting time and prevented thrombosis, confirmed by ultrasound imaging.
According to lead researcher Prof. Sudip Mukherjee, the nanoparticles also preserved human blood in liquid form for 48 hours &mdash; a potential game-changer for blood storage in diagnostics and transfusion.
Moreover, coating medical catheters with KFeOx-NPs improved blood flow and reduced protein adhesion, showing promise for safer and more efficient biomedical devices. The nanoparticles are water-soluble and don&rsquo;t accumulate in fat tissue, making them safer for biological use.
This innovation may pave the way for long-term blood clot prevention and improved cardiovascular treatments.
