<p data-start="90" data-end="398"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">In a groundbreaking advancement for early detection of neurodegenerative diseases, researchers in the US have developed an artificial intelligence tool capable of identifying brain activity patterns linked to nine different types of dementia &mdash; including Alzheimer&rsquo;s &mdash; using a single, commonly available scan.</span></p>
<p data-start="400" data-end="737"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">The tool, named StateViewer, demonstrated high efficiency in diagnosis, accurately identifying the type of dementia in 88% of cases. It also allowed clinicians to interpret scans nearly twice as fast and with up to three times the accuracy compared to conventional methods, according to findings published in the journal Neurology.</span></p>
<p data-start="739" data-end="967"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Developed by researchers at the Mayo Clinic, the AI system was trained and tested on more than 3,600 scans, which included data from patients diagnosed with various forms of dementia and individuals without cognitive impairment.</span></p>
<p data-start="969" data-end="1253"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Currently, diagnosing dementia is a complex process involving cognitive evaluations, blood tests, brain imaging, and detailed clinical interviews. Even with these tools, differentiating between types like Alzheimer&rsquo;s, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia remains difficult.</span></p>
<p data-start="1255" data-end="1642"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Dr. David Jones, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic and director of its Neurology Artificial Intelligence Programme, emphasized the importance of individualized care. &ldquo;Every patient&rsquo;s condition is shaped by the brain&rsquo;s complexity. StateViewer is a step forward in delivering earlier and more accurate insights, with the hope of one day altering the progression of these diseases,&rdquo; he said.</span></p>
<p data-start="1644" data-end="1940"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">StateViewer works by analysing FDG-PET (fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography) scans, which reveal how the brain uses glucose for energy. It then compares these scans to a large reference database of confirmed dementia cases to detect specific patterns tied to each type of the disease.</span></p>
<p data-start="1942" data-end="2172"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Different dementias affect various brain regions &mdash; Alzheimer&rsquo;s typically impacts memory and cognition, Lewy body dementia affects attention and movement, while frontotemporal dementia alters areas governing language and behaviour.</span></p>
<p data-start="2174" data-end="2379"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">The AI tool presents its analysis in the form of colour-coded brain maps that visually highlight affected areas, allowing even non-specialist clinicians to understand and explain the diagnosis confidently.</span></p>
<p data-start="2381" data-end="2592" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node=""><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Dementia currently affects over 55 million people worldwide, with nearly 10 million new cases emerging each year. Alzheimer&rsquo;s remains the most prevalent form and is now the fifth-leading cause of death globally.</span></p>
