A major scientific breakthrough has been achieved by researchers in the UK, where eight new genes have been discovered with strong links to schizophrenia. This finding marks a significant step forward in understanding the root causes of the complex mental disorder and could guide the development of future treatments.
Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric condition that alters how individuals think, feel, and behave. It is often characterised by hallucinations, delusions, disorganised thinking, and impaired social functioning. Despite decades of study, its exact biological causes have remained unclear.
In this latest study, experts at Cardiff University&rsquo;s Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics analysed genetic data from nearly 29,000 people diagnosed with schizophrenia, over 1 lakh healthy individuals, and more than 3,400 affected families. By focusing on rare but high-impact mutations in protein-coding genes, they successfully identified eight genes associated with the disorder.
Among these, STAG1 and ZNF136 were found to have the strongest genetic evidence. Six other genes &mdash; SLC6A1, KLC1, PCLO, ZMYND11, BSCL2, and CGREF &mdash; were also linked with moderate evidence. Notably, SLC6A1 and KLC1 became the first schizophrenia risk genes to be connected solely through missense variants, mutations that directly alter protein structures.
Researchers believe these findings highlight two possible biological pathways for schizophrenia:

Scientists emphasise that while direct treatments from these genetic findings may take years to develop, the discoveries open a vital path for drug discovery, targeted therapies, and personalised medicine.
This research marks a crucial leap forward in decoding the genetic blueprint of schizophrenia and provides renewed hope for millions affected worldwide.
