A well-known Indian-origin couple from North Texas, once admired for their glitzy public image and seen rubbing shoulders with Bollywood celebrities, is now at the center of a multi-million dollar real estate fraud investigation in the United States. Authorities have arrested Sidhartha &ldquo;Sammy&rdquo; Mukherjee and his wife Sunita on charges of defrauding more than 100 investors of over $4 million through a web of fake property deals.
Having come to the States from India seeking asylum, according to prosecutors, the couple created a polished image of success, attending high-profile charity events and hosting Bollywood-themed functions to gain the trust of the Indian-American community and beyond. Their charm and persona masked what investigators are now calling one of the most elaborate white-collar frauds in recent years. Victims were allegedly promised high returns on investments in lucrative real estate ventures. However, the projects never existed. Investors reported receiving forged documents, including fake contracts and payment invoices linked to the Dallas Housing Authority (DHA). When Detective Brian Brennan of the Euless Police Department contacted the DHA, it became clear that no such partnerships or developments were real.
Terry Parvaga, one of the victims, recalled being completely misled. &ldquo;They made you believe they were successful business people. But in the end, they took everything,&rdquo; she said. The investigation widened after numerous complaints were initially dismissed as civil matters. Forensic accountants and the FBI later became involved, revealing more than $4 million in verified losses. Authorities believe the number of affected individuals could be well over 100.
In addition to real estate fraud, the couple is accused of forging documents to fraudulently obtain a federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan, and reportedly scammed elderly individuals by threatening them with fake legal actions to extract money. Detective Brennan described Sammy Mukherjee as &ldquo;probably the most prolific fraudster&rdquo; in his 23-year career, citing a network of deception that spanned fake companies, false identities, and forged records.
Both Sidhartha and Sunita face serious felony theft charges, with potential sentences upto 99 years behind the bars. Sammy, who previously posted a $500,000 bond, is with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement due to his unclear immigration status. Records indicate he also faces unresolved fraud warrants in Mumbai, India.
As the case unfolds, more victims are expected to come forward, and the full scale of the couple&rsquo;s alleged deception may continue to grow.
