The Gujarat Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday arrested a Crime Branch police inspector and an armed police constable for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹30 lakh to obstruct proceedings in an ongoing investigation.
According to officials, the case pertains to a call centre-related probe registered at the CID Crime Gandhinagar Zone Police Station. The complainant alleged that the two police personnel approached him and demanded a large sum of money in exchange for ensuring that no legal action would be initiated against him and his associate.
After refusing to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the ACB and filed a formal complaint. The bureau conducted a preliminary verification of the allegations and subsequently planned a trap operation.
The trap was laid on a public road near an under-construction site of the Hari Group, close to Swagat City Mall in the Sargasan area. During the operation, Armed Police Constable Vipul Desai allegedly met the complainant and accepted the ₹30 lakh bribe. Police Inspector P.K. Patel, attached to the CID Crime Cell in Gandhinagar, is accused of consenting to and facilitating the transaction.
Both officers were apprehended red-handed, and the entire bribe amount was recovered from their possession.
ACB officials stated that the accused allegedly misused their official positions, intimidated the complainant and conspired to demand illegal gratification while investigating the case. The incident has raised serious concerns about misconduct within the police force.
The arrested officers have been booked under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and taken into custody. Investigators are also examining whether the duo had demanded or accepted bribes in other cases.
The ACB said the demand, acceptance and recovery of the ₹30 lakh were fully documented during the operation, establishing the involvement of both accused beyond doubt.
