Garima Saikia Garg, the wife of late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, has demanded a fast-track trial in the alleged murder case, raising serious concerns over the roles of the singer&rsquo;s manager Siddharth Sharma and event organiser Shyamkannu Mahanta.
In a detailed public statement issued on Tuesday, Garima alleged criminal negligence, conspiracy and a systematic disregard for Zubeen Garg&rsquo;s safety. While reiterating her faith in the judiciary, she urged authorities to ensure swift justice in the case that has deeply shaken Assam.
Referring to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) charge sheet filed on December 12, described as one of the most extensive in the state, Garima said the family had carefully examined the document despite the emotional toll. She questioned multiple changes in the singer&rsquo;s accommodation arrangements during his Singapore visit, suggesting that the alterations appeared deliberate rather than incidental.
According to the charge sheet, Zubeen Garg&rsquo;s hotel bookings were repeatedly modified, including after his team reached Singapore. Garima argued that such uncertainty was unacceptable for a performer invited as a brand ambassador for a major international festival. She pointed out that the singer never personally handled hotel or registration details and relied entirely on his manager and organisers, raising concerns about concealed intent.
She also challenged claims that Zubeen Garg travelled to Singapore voluntarily, stating that his images were used extensively for promotions long before the event and that he was allegedly pressured to attend, despite apparent reluctance. Garima further highlighted the absence of a formal written contract for the event, calling it a grave professional lapse.
The charge sheet, she said, also mentioned a so-called &ldquo;One Last Tour&rdquo; allegedly planned by the manager, suggesting Zubeen Garg would retire after a ten-city tour. Garima stated that neither the family nor the singer&rsquo;s close associates had any knowledge of such a plan, even though higher performance fees were reportedly negotiated on this premise.
Raising concerns of medical negligence, Garima alleged that Zubeen Garg was left without timely medical assistance for over an hour despite nearby facilities. She further claimed that the yacht involved in the incident lacked essential safety equipment, trained staff and medical preparedness.
According to evidence cited by investigators, Zubeen Garg, who reportedly had a history of seizures, was encouraged to swim in open waters without a life jacket and was left unattended. Garima alleged that delayed rescue efforts and untrained attempts at resuscitation worsened his condition, asserting that all individuals present bore responsibility.
Calling for urgent judicial intervention, Garima appealed for the constitution of a fast-track court or special bench to conduct daily hearings, noting that the examination of over 300 witnesses could otherwise prolong the case for years. She also urged the appointment of experienced public prosecutors to ensure accountability.
Concluding her statement, Garima said the family continues to wait with patience, placing its trust in the legal system and seeking the strictest punishment for those found guilty in the case.
