The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police&rsquo;s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday arrested Sandipan Garg, a cousin of late singer Zubeen Garg, in connection with the artist&rsquo;s mysterious death in Singapore last month.
Sandipan Garg, an Assam Police Service (APS) officer serving as Deputy Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) in Kamrup district, was taken into custody after detailed questioning. The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Kamrup (Metropolitan) sent him to 14 days of police remand.
According to officials, Sandipan was present when the 52-year-old musician, poet, and filmmaker drowned during a yacht party in Singapore on September 19. His arrest marks the fifth in the ongoing investigation. Earlier, the CID had already detained event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, manager Siddharth Sharma, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and singer Amritprava Mahanta.
The case was initially registered under culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and death due to negligence. However, after further interrogation, murder charges were added to the FIR.
CID officials also uncovered alleged financial irregularities involving Mahanta after conducting raids at his Guwahati residence, where multiple seals and documents were seized. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax (IT) Department are now expected to launch a parallel probe into possible money-laundering links related to the incident.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed that central agencies have been briefed about the developments as the investigation into Zubeen Garg&rsquo;s death deepens.
