A newly married woman conspired with her alleged paramour to murder her husband during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, offering hired assassins up to ₹20 lakh to carry out the killing, police sources have disclosed.
Sonam Raghuvanshi stands accused of orchestrating the brutal murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, whose body was discovered in a gorge near a waterfall in the Sohra area of East Khasi Hills district on 2nd June. The couple had travelled to the northeastern state for their honeymoon just weeks after their 11th May wedding.
According to senior police sources, the murder plot was hatched within days of the couple's marriage. Sonam allegedly conspired with her lover, identified as Raj Kushwaha, to eliminate her new husband. The decision to book a one-way ticket to Meghalaya for the honeymoon was part of the premeditated scheme, investigators believe.
Police sources reveal that Sonam initially offered the contract killers ₹4 lakh for the murder but later increased the sum to ₹20 lakh when they initially refused to carry out the killing.
The hired assassins first made contact with the newlyweds in Bengaluru, where they boarded the connecting flight to the northeast together. Sources indicate that because the victim and the accused were from the same city, they struck up conversations during the journey, providing cover for the killers' presence.
On 23rd May, the couple embarked on a trek to a steep peak to view a waterfall, with the hired killers following their trail. During the trek, Sonam allegedly feigned exhaustion and began walking considerably behind her husband and the assassins.
When the group reached an isolated location, police sources state that Sonam instructed the men to kill her husband. However, the killers initially refused, claiming they were too tired to carry out the act. It was at this point that Sonam reportedly doubled her offer to ₹20 lakh.
Following the murder, Sonam allegedly assisted the killers in disposing of Raja's body by pushing it into the gorge.
Whilst Kushwaha did not travel to Meghalaya, Shillong Police sources suggest he masterminded the operation from behind the scenes, maintaining contact with Sonam throughout the period leading up to the murder.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to piece together the full extent of the conspiracy that led to Raja Raghuvanshi's death in what should have been the first days of his married life.
