The West Midlands Police have launched an urgent manhunt after a racially aggravated rape of a 20-year-old woman, believed to be of Indian heritage, in Walsall, northern England. The attack, described as &ldquo;absolutely appalling,&rdquo; has sparked deep outrage and concern among local South Asian communities.
Police were called to the Park Hall area on Saturday evening after reports of a woman in distress. The force later confirmed the incident was being treated as a racially motivated assault and released CCTV footage of the white male suspect, believed to be in his 30s, with short hair and wearing dark clothing. &ldquo;We are doing absolutely everything we can to arrest the person responsible,&rdquo; said Detective Superintendent Ronan Tyrer, who is leading the investigation.
Tyrer urged anyone with information to come forward, saying: &ldquo;It&rsquo;s vital we hear from anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously in the area or has dashcam or CCTV footage. Your information could be the vital breakthrough that we need.&rdquo; Specialist officers are now working with forensic teams and local units to gather evidence and identify the suspect.
Community groups have expressed alarm, claiming the victim is a Punjabi woman, and drawing attention to a similar racially aggravated rape of a British Sikh woman in nearby Oldbury just weeks earlier. &ldquo;West Midlands Police have now had two racially aggravated rapes of young women in their 20s in the last two months and urgently need to find those responsible,&rdquo; the Sikh Federation UK said in a statement. However, police clarified that, &ldquo;At this stage, we are not linking this attack to any other offences.&rdquo;
Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby of Walsall Police said the force was intensifying patrols and engaging with local residents. &ldquo;Walsall is a diverse area, and we know the fear and concern that this awful attack will cause in our communities. There will be an increased policing presence in the coming days,&rdquo; he said, as authorities continue to appeal for public assistance in bringing the attacker to justice.
