In a major breakthrough against organized crime, Punjab Police&rsquo;s Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) and Mohali Police arrested two members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang following a gunfight on the Ambala&ndash;Dera Bassi highway. The accused, identified as Sharanjit Singh from Mohali and Aman Kumar from Khijargarh village, Zirakpur, were allegedly working for foreign-based gangster Goldy Dhillon.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the joint operation successfully foiled a plot to target a businessman in Punjab. Two .32 bore pistols and 10 live cartridges were recovered from the duo.
Preliminary investigation revealed that both men were involved in a firing incident that took place in Rajpura last month. DGP Yadav stated that Goldy Dhillon, operating from abroad, had directed the accused to carry out the attack.
AGTF Additional DGP Promod Ban further informed that Dhillon was also behind the killing of an Indian-origin industrialist in Abbotsford, Canada, in October.
DIG (AGTF) Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said both arrested individuals had a criminal background, with two previous FIRs related to arms offences already registered against Aman Kumar.
Sharing details of the encounter, SSP Harmandeep Hans said credible intelligence led to the interception of the suspects. During the chase, the accused opened fire at police personnel, prompting retaliatory firing in which both were injured and subsequently arrested.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 25 of the Arms Act in Mohali.
