A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed in Uttarakhand to probe the murder of a 24-year-old student from Tripura in Dehradun, amid allegations of a racially motivated attack. The move comes even as Dehradun police continue to state that their investigation has found no evidence suggesting racial intent.
The victim, Anjel Chakma, a resident of Agartala, was pursuing an MBA at a private university in Uttarakhand. He suffered critical injuries during an altercation in Dehradun on December 9 and died while undergoing treatment on December 26. His post-mortem report confirmed that death resulted from grievous injuries to the head and neck.
According to the FIR registered at Selaqui police station, Anjel and his younger brother Michael, were allegedly abused with caste-based slurs by intoxicated individuals before being attacked with a knife and a metal bracelet. Michael sustained head injuries, while Anjel suffered fatal blows during the incident.
Police officials have maintained that the incident stemmed from a verbal dispute that escalated into violence, rather than a racially motivated assault. Authorities stated that initial complaints were examined before the FIR was formally registered, and charges were subsequently upgraded as medical evidence and circumstances evolved. Following Anjel&rsquo;s death, murder charges and provisions under the SC/ST Act were added.
So far, three adult accused have been arrested, two minors have been sent to a juvenile correctional home, and one suspect is believed to have fled to Nepal. The reward for information leading to the arrest of the absconding accused has been increased to ₹1 lakh.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has taken up the matter with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who has assured strict action against those responsible.
