Tension gripped West Bengal&rsquo;s Hooghly district after the body of a trainee nurse was found hanging in a private nursing home in Singur under suspicious circumstances on Wednesday night.
The deceased, identified as Deepali Jana from Nandigram in East Midnapore, had joined the nursing home just three days earlier. She had completed her General Nursing Midwifery (GNM) diploma from a Bengaluru institute last year.
According to police, her body was discovered hanging from the ceiling in a third-floor room of the hospital. Staff members first spotted her and informed the police, who later sent the body for post-mortem examination.
&ldquo;A case of unnatural death has been registered, and investigations are underway. The exact cause will be known after the autopsy report,&rdquo; said a senior Hooghly district police officer.
The victim&rsquo;s family has alleged murder, claiming she could not have taken her own life. They have lodged a complaint against the nursing home owner and held the hospital authorities responsible.
The incident triggered protests in the area, with locals surrounding police personnel and demanding justice. The grieving parents of the nurse staged a sit-in on the road, insisting that their daughter had been killed.
&ldquo;My daughter came for training. She was healthy and in good spirits. I can&rsquo;t understand what happened. The police must find out the truth and punish the culprits,&rdquo; her mother said.
