A Trinamool Congress worker from Malda was found shot dead in a mango orchard on Tuesday, nearly 12 hours after he went missing. The victim, identified as Obaidullah Khan, a coal trader from the College More area under Kaliachak police station, was discovered with multiple bullet wounds in English Bazaar&rsquo;s Katagar locality. His motorcycle was found abandoned a short distance away.
Family members said Obaidullah left home around 4 p.m. on Monday but never returned, prompting them to file a missing-person complaint the same evening. &ldquo;We tried calling him several times, but his phone was unreachable,&rdquo; a family member said. Early Tuesday, the relatives received information about a body found in the orchard, later confirmed to be Obaidullah.
Police officers at the scene said the body bore clear gunshot injuries. &ldquo;The body has been sent for post-mortem. Prima facie, it appears he was shot dead. A case has been registered and investigation is on,&rdquo; a senior Malda district police official said. However, the family could not confirm whether the killing stemmed from political rivalry, business disputes, or personal enmity.
The murder has revived concerns over recurring political violence in Malda. Earlier this year, Trinamool leader and businessman Babla Sarkar was shot dead in English Bazaar, leading to the arrest of nine people, including a former municipal chairman. With Tuesday&rsquo;s killing, police are now probing whether Obaidullah&rsquo;s death is part of a larger pattern of targeted attacks in the region.&nbsp;
