The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Joynal Abedin, a former professor at Gossaigaon College in Assam, who was arrested for sharing social media posts seen as supportive of Pakistan and for allegedly making obscene remarks online. The Court made it clear that although he will be released from jail, he will not return to his teaching position for now.
Abedin has already spent six months in prison. The judges noted that the trial could take a long time since multiple witnesses still need to be examined. They said this was a key factor in letting him leave custody.
However, the Court also stressed that the bail should not be interpreted as a clean slate. The suspension from his college will stay in place because there are allegations that he harassed female students and behaved inappropriately at work. The judges advised strongly against reinstating him until the case is fully resolved.
Abedin had first approached the Supreme Court after the Gauhati High Court refused to grant him bail. The case gained attention due to a Facebook post in which he reportedly expressed support for Pakistani citizens during a tense moment between India and Pakistan. The High Court earlier said his post showed disregard for basic civic responsibilities.
Last month, the Supreme Court itself had raised serious concerns about his online behavior, calling him a potential risk to women students. On Monday, the Court recognized the severity of those allegations but said the slow pace of the trial meant he could not remain in jail indefinitely.
For now, Abedin will step out of custody but remain out of the classroom as the proceedings continue.
