Kolkata Police has constituted a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged rape of an outsider woman inside the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) boys' hostel in Joka.
The accused, identified as Parmanand Mahaveer Toppannavar (alias Parmanand Jain, 26), is a second-year student at IIM-C. The victim alleges that she was invited to the boys' hostel under the pretext of a counselling session, during which the accused offered her pizza and cold drinks laced with sedatives. She claims she fell unconscious and was raped while unconscious.
However, the case has taken a complex turn with contradictory statements. While the victim detailed her assault in her police complaint, her father told the media that his daughter had merely fainted after falling from a vehicle and denied any wrongdoing by the student.
Despite the conflicting accounts, a Kolkata trial court remanded the accused to police custody till July 19.
The SIT will investigate not only the allegations of rape but also a possible breach in IIM-Calcutta's security protocols. Officials have raised concerns over how the victim gained access to the hostel without being registered in the visitors' logbook.
The Haridevpur Police Station has sent a formal notice to the IIM-C administration, seeking clarity on their existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) regarding campus visitor management.
The IIM-Calcutta authorities have declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
