A female ten Plus Two Commerce student of Pattamundai College in Odisha's Kendrapara district has allegedly died by suicide after reportedly experiencing inappropriate conduct by a teacher during an examination. The incident has triggered widespread outrage throughout the region.
According to the complaint filed by the girl's mother at the Pattamundai Police Station, the student appeared for an examination on February 19, during which an invigilating teacher called her outside, purportedly to check for malpractice. During this check, he allegedly touched her inappropriately.
When the student resisted, the teacher allegedly threatened her with expulsion and warned her against disclosing the incident. She returned to the examination hall after a 10-minute delay, visibly distressed and tearful, which affected her ability to concentrate on the exam.
The girl reportedly shared the experience with her mother upon returning home. Her parents then approached college authorities about the incident, but were told to wait until after the completion of exams to address the matter.
Unable to cope with the mental trauma from the incident, the student allegedly took her own life on February 24 by hanging herself at her residence.
Police initially registered the case as an unnatural death. Following the written complaint filed by the girl's mother on Saturday, authorities have intensified their investigation, including collecting and examining the college's CCTV footage.
"The footage is being examined as part of the ongoing probe," said IIC (Inspector) Dheeraj Lenka.
Meanwhile, Pattamundai College Principal Dillip Kumar Bhuyan has denied the allegations, stating, "We are cooperating with the cops in the investigation and did not find anything as per the allegations while checking the CCTV cameras of the college campus."
Sources indicate that further investigation into the matter continues, and the validity of the allegations will be determined once the investigation is complete.
