A chilling murder in California has stunned both the Indian diaspora and the wider American community. Varun Suresh, a 29-year-old Indian-origin man, has been charged with murder for brutally killing 71-year-old registered sex offender David Brimmer in Fremont.
Police say Suresh meticulously tracked his victim using California&rsquo;s Megan&rsquo;s Law database, which publicly lists convicted sex offenders. He allegedly told investigators he had &ldquo;always wanted to kill a sex offender&rdquo; and that &ldquo;they hurt children and deserve to die.&rdquo; In chilling words, he added, &ldquo;It is not your duty to decide whether Heaven will accept them, it&rsquo;s your duty to send them to the gates.&rdquo;
According to court documents, Suresh impersonated a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) to gain access to Brimmer&rsquo;s home. He initially shook Brimmer&rsquo;s hand before forcing him inside. Brimmer managed to flee, but Suresh chased him for nearly two blocks, reportedly taunting him about God and urging him to say his &ldquo;last words.&rdquo;
The pursuit ended in a neighbor&rsquo;s kitchen, where Suresh stabbed Brimmer in the neck and ordered him to repent. As the elderly man tried to crawl away, Suresh slit his throat, leaving him fatally wounded. Even after his arrest, Suresh expressed no remorse, telling investigators he felt &ldquo;no sadness&rdquo; and even described the killing as &ldquo;honestly really fun.&rdquo;
This wasn&rsquo;t Suresh&rsquo;s first brush with law enforcement. In 2021, he was arrested after leaving a suspicious bag at a Fremont hotel, claiming it was a bomb. At the time, he told police he believed the hotel CEO was a pedophile and admitted he had been &ldquo;hunting&rdquo; the executive. That case involved charges of criminal threats, burglary, and hoax bomb-making.
For now, Suresh remains in custody and will be presented in court. Authorities say the attack was clearly premeditated and targeted, raising disturbing questions about vigilantism, mental health, and the misuse of publicly accessible sex offender databases.
