A letter petition has been sent to Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, requesting the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance of the alleged gang-rape of a first-year law student at South Calcutta Law College on June 25.
The petition, filed by advocate Satyam Singh, claims the three accused are linked to the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). It calls for the transfer of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and a time-bound probe, citing concerns about impartiality.
The plea also demands that the West Bengal government pay Rs 50 lakh in interim compensation to the survivor for her medical, legal, and rehabilitation needs. It further seeks protection for the victim, her family, and witnesses, along with comprehensive guidelines to ensure women&rsquo;s safety in educational institutions.
The petition criticises TMC leaders, particularly MLA Madan Mitra, for making insensitive and victim-blaming remarks. Though the TMC has distanced itself from Mitra&rsquo;s comments and issued a show-cause notice, the plea urges the court to hold such public figures accountable.
