Initial reports suggested that all eight elephants in the herd had died, but officials later confirmed that one animal survived with injuries.</span></p>
<p data-start="709" data-end="1052"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Forest officials said heavy fog in the area is suspected to have contributed to the incident. Autopsies of the seven dead elephants are currently underway, while the injured animal is being treated by local veterinary doctors. Cremation of the carcasses will be carried out near the accident site, and all legal formalities are being followed.</span></p>
<p data-start="1054" data-end="1336"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Railway authorities stated that the location of the accident is not a designated elephant corridor. According to officials, the train driver applied emergency brakes upon noticing the herd on the tracks, but the elephants collided with the moving train, resulting in the derailment.</span></p>
<p data-start="1338" data-end="1626"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Accident relief trains and senior railway officials from the divisional headquarters were rushed to the site soon after the incident. The general manager of the Northeast Frontier Railway and the divisional railway manager of Lumding also reached the location to oversee restoration work.</span></p>
<p data-start="1628" data-end="1905"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Helpline numbers were activated at Guwahati railway station to assist passengers. Those travelling in the affected coaches were temporarily accommodated in vacant berths in other compartments. The train, without the derailed coaches, departed the site for Guwahati at 6.11 a.m.</span></p>
<p data-start="1907" data-end="2182"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Railway officials said additional coaches will be attached to the train at Guwahati, after which it will resume its onward journey. Trains scheduled to pass through the affected section have been diverted via the UP line, and restoration work on the damaged track is ongoing.</span></p>
