The mysterious death of a trainee nurse at a private hospital in Singur, Hooghly district, has sparked outrage after her family alleged she was raped, tortured, and murdered.
The young nurse&rsquo;s body was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in the nursing home. Her family claimed she had been subjected to both mental and physical harassment at the workplace and accused hospital authorities of attempting to destroy evidence late at night.
The autopsy was conducted at AIIMS Kalyani, following which the body was brought to her hometown Nandigram in East Midnapore for last rites, where grieving locals gathered in large numbers.
The nurse had only recently joined the private hospital after completing her General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) diploma in Bangalore last year. A case of unnatural death was registered, but her family has insisted on a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, expressing distrust in the local police investigation.
Acting on a complaint filed by the victim&rsquo;s family, police arrested nursing home owner Subir Ghora and the nurse&rsquo;s partner Radhagovinda Ghatan, who allegedly refused to marry her despite their relationship. Investigators are also looking into accusations of misconduct by the hospital owner.
The case has reignited debate over safety of women healthcare workers in private medical institutions and the handling of such cases by law enforcement in West Bengal.
