Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the state police have thwarted major drug trafficking attempts in two separate operations.
In Golaghat, authorities seized 512.58 grams of narcotics, valued at around ₹3 crore in the international market. Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
In another operation in Kokrajhar, police recovered 963.19 kg of ganja. The Chief Minister reaffirmed that the crackdown on narcotics will continue across Assam.
Earlier this week, Assam Police seized drugs worth ₹9.5 crore and arrested three suspects, including a woman, in two separate raids.
Acting on intelligence about the movement of contraband from Silchar to Guwahati via the Silchar-Coimbatore Express, a team from Panbazar police station intercepted a female suspect at Guwahati Railway Station. A subsequent search, conducted in the presence of independent witnesses, led to the recovery of 20,000 methamphetamine tablets valued at ₹5 crore, a mobile phone, and ₹1,000 in cash. The accused, 31-year-old Parvina Khatun Bibi, hails from Sadialer Khuti village in West Bengal&rsquo;s Cooch Behar district.
In another case, two drug peddlers were arrested at Salchapra in Silchar, Cachar district. Police recovered 847 grams of heroin and 4.035 kg of opium, with an estimated street value of ₹4.5 crore.
Officials believe the narcotics originated in Myanmar and entered Assam through hidden routes via Mizoram. Myanmar, which shares a 1,643 km unfenced border with Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram, is a known transit hub for heroin and methamphetamine. Its Chin State is notorious for trafficking drugs, exotic wildlife, and other contraband into India through six districts of Mizoram&mdash;Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
