The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Monday directed the Uttar Pradesh Police chief to submit a report within three days regarding alleged attacks by a &ldquo;nude gang&rdquo; on women in Meerut district.
Taking suo motu cognisance of the incidents reported over the past fortnight, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to the UP DGP, urging an immediate, impartial, and time-bound investigation. She also instructed the state police, particularly in Meerut, to step up patrolling in affected areas to ensure women&rsquo;s safety.
&ldquo;The National Commission for Women has taken serious cognisance of the media report titled &ndash; Panic in Meerut due to 'naked gang' coming out of fields and attacking women,&rdquo; the Commission stated.
Rahatkar emphasized the urgency of identifying and arresting the accused, directing the DGP to take strict action under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. &ldquo;We expect concrete and immediate action from the state administration,&rdquo; she said, seeking a detailed report within three days.
At least four attacks by &ldquo;nude men with long hair&rdquo; have been reported in the Daurala area of Meerut district in the last two weeks.
Last month, the NCW Chairperson had sent Uttar Pradesh Women Commission member Dr. Meenakshi Bharala to meet the family of 22-year-old Nikki Bhati, who was allegedly burnt alive over dowry in Noida. Condemning this social evil, Rahatkar expressed concern over the persistence of dowry in society.
&ldquo;There is an urgent need to uproot the evil using the existing legal provisions,&rdquo; she said, urging the public to actively discourage and disown the regressive practice.
